Just put on timing cover, pump, etc. on my 65 289 with the alum waterpump. Everything fine but a Car buddy came by and we discussed gasket seals, etc. He said that he installed his timing cover and waterpump using an rtv product called Permatex ultra copper gasket maker. I used the gaskets and No. #2 Permatex. Have used for years on waterpumps and have never had a leak. Curious as to whether it's a good way to go. Have a tube of that stuff that I used on intake ends in place of those cork ones.

I always use the paper gaskets, unless it's an emergency situation. I'm sure the RTV would hold, but I feel better with the paper in places like the water pump, timing cover, t-stat. I generally use gasket shellac to glue the paper and cork gaskets in place. I also chuck the end seals of the manifold gaskets and use a bead of RTV. Have had fewer leaks with the RTV. I also use that Ultra Copper on my header gaskets as a standard procedure, I let it set up for about 10 minutes, and then bolt the header on. Never had a header leak as long as I tightened the bolts once in a while.

I have always used the gasket and RVT,some times just the black RVT or Permatex #1 or #2.I dont usally have any leaks, expect my intake leaked the 1st time I put it on.I didn't use enough RVT on the ends.I dont use the cork ends either.SCOOP ------------------ 65 coupe,351w,C4,Big Boss 429 hood scoop,8"3.40 TracLoc,Crager SS,Black Suede. https://mustangsandmore.com/ubb/Fastymz.html
