C-5 is like a C-4, but with a lockup converter, I believe. My '86 Mustang LX with a 3.8 had a C-5, looked just like the C-4 in my truck.------------------ 1970 Deluxe SportsRoof (63B), (2)46 Ford trucks, 47 Ford truck, 57 Ford Fairlane 500 4dr, '72 Olds Vista Cruiser, '88 Bronco II...you can never have too many cars

And it has only 3 clutches in the clutch packs as opposed to 4. Thanks for the help.I've never heard of the C-5 before. So the C4 is a stronger trans then the C5.SCOOP ------------------ 65 coupe,351w,RPM intake,Carter625,shorty headers,2.5 exhaust, Flowmasters,C4,open 8" 2:80,Big Boss 429 hood scoop,Crager SS,Black Suede. I'd go with the C-4. They made those longer, which means more are available. C-5 was used from late '70's to late '80's or so. Plus C-4 has a larger selection of converters and other performance goodies. C-5 wasn't really meant to be a 'performance' tranny...------------------ 1970 Deluxe SportsRoof (63B), (2)46 Ford trucks, 47 Ford truck, 57 Ford Fairlane 500 4dr, '72 Olds Vista Cruiser, '88 Bronco II...you can never have too many cars [This message has been edited by 70SportsRoof (edited 02-12-2002).] [This message has been edited by 70SportsRoof (edited 02-12-2002).]

Just an aside ... I've been rooting around under my non-running '68 GT (some people would call it a parts car, but it's too good!), and I've confirmed it's a Toploader connected to some kind of Ford in-line 6 engine, and the bell housing has a serial number that starts C5AA. The engine was definitely a V8 originally. Does that mean anything? Have I got a manual tranny with a C5 auto bell housing? Should I go back and get the whole number? Thanks! Simon

Simon, the C-5 is a type of automatic trans that Ford used in the mid 70's-80's. It's a version of the C-4 automatic. I'm sure the bellhousing you have w/ the C5AA would refer to a '65 year manual transmission. ------------------ 1970 Deluxe SportsRoof (63B), (2)46 Ford trucks, 47 Ford truck, 57 Ford Fairlane 500 4dr, '72 Olds Vista Cruiser, '88 Bronco II...you can never have too many cars
