I knew you guys that play with the early Mustangs can help Ernie with this:

Hi Steve, I would normally post this on the forum but I thought maybe the pictures would help and I don't know how to attach pics for the forum. Anyway, I bought brackets and motor mounts at 2 different swap meets and I thought they were from a 66 Mustang. I wanted those due to the height difference and I am putting a 351W in my 65 fastback. BUT when I drop a 1974 351W block in the mount holes are wider than where the motor mounts are by about 3/4 inch. That is with the mounts spread as wide as I can get them.
Any Ideas or could you put on the forum with pics. If you will let me know how to attach pics I will go ahead and put on the forum. Thanks for any help you can give me, Ernie (Ekbeanctr)

Thanks Steve, I went out and checked the Hooker website for the Super Comp Headers I want to use and they footnoted that I need the 66 style motor mounts or I would use the 65. Has anybody tried installing these headers using the 65 style mounts, still I still have them?

Good point, Scoop!

Ernie, you are just trying them out, right?

You do bolt them to the engine, then lower the engine and slide the through bolts through the motor mounts.

Those are 66 style mounts right? I had some flowtech headers installed on mine with 65 mounts and they rubbed the drivers side shock tower. Am I going to have trouble installing my tri-y headers with my 65 mounts? thanks!

Yes, I was just trying them out. I tried bolting them to the motor, then lowered the motor onto the brackets. Cannot get bolts through because the holes do not line up. Do these look like they are 66 motor mounts, that's what I was told when I bought them?

I can tell you that I have 65 mounts and they look nothing like what you posted, so I would think they are 66 mounts that you have.

Went out and looked at the 66 mounts on my 65. They look like the pic. The Oct. 98 issue of M&Fords mentions the 65 mount causing header problems. Actually, the 66 mounts were on some later 65's. Have also heard people here state that the 65 are fine.

My 65 mounts worked but with shorty headers.I would stay with the super comps they are the best header.

Well, It looks like it's time to do a little massaging on the frame brackets. I think If I weld the current holes shut and redrill new holes about 1/2 over I can move the brackets closer to the frame and then the holes in the motor mounts should line up. Does anybody know if that will cause problems down the road. I am planning on a 393CI 450-500 HP motor sitting on these. Are there any other high performance alternatives that would be better.

Over the years I have had several sets of 6111 Hooker super comp headers on MM using it's original 65 motor mounts. The first set I got in 1971 and had chromed. They all fit fine with the original mounts. No modifications were ever required. The 66 and up style mount is actually bigger.

Alex, I looked at the Hooker Header website and they are calling for a 6208 Part number for swap headers. I couldn't find the part number 6111. For the 6208 they have a footnote that says it requires 66 style mounts? I am assuming to raise the motor slightly giving the headers more room at the top?? I am putting a 351W in the car with AFR Heads and I want to get the best headers I can get that will fit?. Any ideas would be appreciated

OOPS! : I some how missed the "351" part Ernie. I thought that we were talking 289-302. Never the less, on 351W installations I have always just shimed the original mounts up at the "bisquit" with a 1/4 to 1/2 inch spacer made of aluminum. I have used the 6208 Hookers before many times and converted to the 66 and up style mount also. Usually a 1/4 inch thick head bolt style washer between the mount and block is all that was neccasary to pick the engine up.

Thanks for the info Alex. I think I am going to try moving the frame brackets in a little so I can use the 66 style mounts. If that doesn't work I will just shim up the 65 mounts, since I still have them. I appreciate all the feedback from everybody, It's always nice to know that there is tons of help out here on M&M. You all have a GREAT NEW YEAR!. My resolution is to have the Fastback done this year. Alex, do you sell Hooker Parts, if so How Much are the 6208-1 Headers.?

I got my new motor mounts today - guess what they fit! Evidently the ones I bought at the swap meet were not 66 mounts as they were labeled Thanks to everyone who helped.
