I am a longtime subscriber to Esquire, one of the truly classy men's magazines.

In the December 2001 issue (the one with Julia Roberts and George Clooney on the cover), there are a couple of interesting things for Ford lovers like me.

On page 32, there is an exclusive look at four rejected prototype designs for the new Ford Thunderbird. Two were designed in good old Dearborn, and two others were designed in Turin, Italy. They are all VERY cool cars, but I think Ford chose the best design. I always think it's interesting to look behind the scenes at a car's development! Check it out, 'cos I don't think you'll see these cars anywhere else!

The other thing in the magazine is a very neat article called "The 162 Greatest Things About America." Wouldn't you know a Mustang would make it onto the list? Item #43, to be exact: "The 1966 Ford Mustang convertible."

I always knew Esquire had class!

Aah, what the heh, I'll ask Where did apple pie figure on the list? We all know the expression "as American as apple pie", yet apple pie is eaten all over the world. What's more, not once on my many trips to the US have I ever been offered apple pie! How did this expression arise? Do Americans truly eat a lot of apple pie??

I like apple pie, but it's a once-a-year type thing for me.

We ought to say 'as American as cheeseburgers' or 'as American as pizza'

Good point! I heard once that pizza was invented by an Italian but he was living in LA (?) when he did it!

Interestingly, apple pie is not on the list. I'm sure this is because the editors at Esquire did not want the list to be a bunch of typical American cliches. (Esquire prides itself on its individualism.)

The list wasn't meant to be a bunch of "American" things that we've all heard many times before. The list was a bunch of things that they felt were truly symbolic of the spirit of America, or more specifically, the spirit of The American Male. I have to say that I agreed with just about every one of the items.

The only pie-related item at all was item #71: "The annual Pie Festival in Pie Town, New Mexico. Home of the coconut cream pie. Local motto: 'Life goes on, days go by, that's why you should stop for pie.'"

The list is in no particular order, but I have to find fulfillment in the fact that Hawaiian Punch, a drink I truly think is worthy of the gods, is item #3!

I might be straying a little off topic here, but........

In high school I was lucky enough to get a tour of the Ford proving grounds in Yucca, AZ. My friend's mother works there. We got a complete tour of the place. The vehicles they test there are prototypes and models that will be introduced 4-5 years later. There was a prototype Mustang there. This was before the SN95 body style came out. Every Ford enthusiast should be glad that this prototype didn't make it because it was FUGLY. Imagine the worst "riced out" Mustang you have ever seen, multiply your disgust by ten fold and there you have it. And this was before "rice" was "cool". My favorite part was the high speed oval track. Nothing like having the driver push 130+ mph then take his hands off the wheel and turn around to talk to you while on a banking turn

Nope, the 57 Chevy, as beautiful as that car is, did not make the list. The 66 Mustang convertible was the only car to make the list!

I don't get your reference to "As Good As It Gets"/Jack Nicholson. What do you mean? I don't think one was mentioned by Jack in that movie, was it?
