I recently purchased a 1967 Mustang Coupe that I want to restore. How can I tell if engine is the original? The Serial number of the engine is 0A238243 the VIN of the vehicle is 7T01C191895 and the warranty number is 65A W 2K 25A 16 0 W. If the engine is possibly the original 289, I'd like to bebuild it, but if it is not, I'll probably buy a short block 302. Can someone help!

It's not the original. The serial number {0A238243} indicates it's from a 1970 Ford built in Atlanta. 0 = 1970, A = Atlanta, the rest was the last of the car's VIN.There is also a casting number on the right side on the block above where the starter bolt that could tell you more. Thanks for the Info! The answer was probably what I expected but I was still hopeful that the engine might be original. I did take a peek at the block, by the starter and a two Digit number is there and appears to be 26. Would you know if this block would be too old to have hardened valve seats ? One last question, I've read two different opinions on the hardened valve seat issue. One opinion is "absolutely get hardened valve seats if you want to do a proper engine rebuild". The other opinion I read was "If you're not Drag Racing or towing heavy loads with this engine, original unhardened valve seats will be fine. Any opinion on this one? Thanks again for the Information!

Hardened seat valves are worthwhile on a rebuild, but if you note no issues with engine as it stands then I'd suggest driving it until you experience issues. Besides, are you certain that they have not been installed by previous owner? I'd wait for issues if it were me.Just another opinion. ------------------ Jerry www.67Fastback.com "The danger in communication is the illusion that it has been accomplished." G.B. Shaw
