I have a REAAAALLY dumb question: What kind of transmission fluid do I use in my 1966 C-4 transmission? I have always thought that I was supposed to use Dexron III Mercon fluid, but a parts counter person said, with some certainty in his voice, for me to use type FA fluid. Which fluid is correct?

And what brand(s) of fluid do you all recommend? I want the BEST stuff only...synthetic? Regular kind? Which one? :?

Type "F" only. NOT type "FA". It is available most everywhere. FA is Dextron.

Thanks, Alex:
The reason he was SO certain about type "FA" is because I had asked him which fluid to use in my C4 and he immediately asked me "How old is the transmission?" I said that it was a 1966 transmission, and that's when he replied, "Type FA."

Would using Dexron III Mercon type fluid have hurt my transmission? Thanks again to any and all for any info!

Andy, it won't hurt it, but it will make it slip and shift crappy.

What is type "FA" transmission fluid for, anyhow? Is it for any Ford transmissions at all, or is it fluid for something else entirely?

FA is a name that that was created for a FoMoCo version of Dextron. It is the same as Dextron.
