I don't have any books so i'm hoping one of y'all can help me out.

66 289 with 70 mav 302 heads, stock 4 bbl intake, edelbrock 600 carb. I think it's a stock cam it's a fairly decent idle at 700. WHat would be the best timing for this setup?

With stock compression about 8 degrees initial. With higher compression and the hipo style cam 10-12. Experiment between 8-12. I found 10 worked well for me.

i have found that most ford engines like 10 initial and 36 - 38 total advance(not including vacuum advance). although some will go as high as 14 initial, mostly late model injected cars.

If I remember correctly the timing was set for about 9 degrees initial. The only thing is it seems that in the time that the secondaries on the carb are opening, it bogs down, then kicks back in and scoots. I'm thinking either the timing or the carb is rich. Idears?

actually you want to delay the time when the secondaries kick in. what is happening is the motor is going lean with all the extra air and it takes a second for the secondary fuel system to kick in. the other thing you can do is raise the secondary float leval slightly. this will allow fuel to flow a little more quickly.
