I've been reading where a few of you guys are bolting in the T5 Z transmission and it got me to wondering. Where did you buy yours at?

I'm planning on getting one next year and am curious as to what kind of deals everybody found, and from what company.

Thanks!

I don't know about the Z, but Jim Swarr has good deals on a Tremec 3550.

Stew,

I don't know jack about these trannys. What's a z-spec? The one we got is a '93 cobra super-duty (w/3.35 1st gear). It was barely used and came with all the swap parts for the '66. It was $750 for everything.

Summit has a "super duty" one with the 2.95 1st gear, for $1,109.95. It's FMS-M7003Z, does that make it a Z spec?

Ah...I thought you had the T5 Z tranny, Steve, and basically you do. 'Bout the only difference I can think of is the first and fifth gear ratio's.

Yeah Stew,

I was playing around with calculating the speeds in different gears in Mel's car and she'll be shifting out of 1st at 34 mph, 2nd at 57 mph, and 3rd at 86 mph, 4th at 114mph. That's 1-2 shift is gonna happen in about 60-70 feet, about 2 seconds after launch! She's gonna be busy going down the track. What's interesting is after the 6000 rpm shifts, the engine will drop to 3600 rpm for 2nd, 4000 rpm for 3rd, and 4500 rpm for 4th. The Z-spec 1st gear ratio would be better! It would allow the engine to pull from about 4000rpm in 2nd gear. If you get one, do you wanna trade.

I like the 2.95 1st gear too...especially because I'll probably end up getting 4.10's for the rear diff, instead of the 3.73's I'd been planning on.

As for the trade. As much as I think your (Mels) car is fantastic, I'm gonna have to stick with the Silver Fox.

Oh...you weren't talking about trading cars? Ohhhh, my bad!

We can't afford to "hot rod" a Fox car. You'll like the z-tranny!

My Z spec t-5 came from Jegs, they wer $1009 at the time but currently are $1109, I thought it was a bargain when you consider prices on used and rebuilt units.
Mine will be in the car by the end of this week if I can get just a couple of hours free to work on it.

Well I got mine from the first guy that sold me a cable clutch conversion. The cable clutch didn't work out to well, but the tranny is fine now that I have been able to test it with DB Engineering Clutch Cable. I am no expert, but seems to me that you could get a used T-5 and have it rebuilt with the different 1st and 5th gears along with the steel input shaft bearing(not sure what it is called specifically, bolts to the front of the case and has the shaft going through it). I haven't asked the ford dealers, but somebody out there has the rebuild kits available (I remembering seeing them somewhere, but I can't remember). That way you can save your money for a cable clutch, especially if you have full length headers.

Good Luck
