I don't know why I didn't think of this before. As per Steve L's suggestion, I've just fitted a B&W deep oil pan - alloy type. It looks like a prime candidate for whacking rocks without sliding over them. Should I weld a steel skid plate on, or am I being too pessimistic? If I DO whack a fixed rock head on, is the pan gonna crack??

Yes sir, it will crack. Don't go off road with an allow deep sump pan. A sheet metal pan will just dent, hopefully. This is from my 4X4 experiences. SteveW

Groan Well, I went for a test drive over all the local speed bumps, and survived. Tonight I'm gonna check out the mother of all speed bumps, about a mile from home. It's sort of about 8 inches high at the front and back, bulging up to about 12 inches in the middle. It's also very wide (maybe five feet), and the front edge has crumbled to make a vertical face. I don't know why they don't just close the road If I can make it over THAT, I'm laughing!

Ooooof! Well, I landed smack on the bottom surface of the oil pan. I guess that beats catching the leading edge! I'm gonna keep my old oil pan / filter in the trunk, just in case!

I think I would have gotten a ruler out and done the math before I "smacked the bottom surface of the oil pan"

I landed on my pan before speeding late at night and it just dented the bottom. I have a sheet metal pan. Never had a problem with rocks but I guess it's possible.

MrXerox, the math on speed bumps (with reference to whacking oil pan undersides) is really quite complex, since you have to factor in suspension dive when your wheels leave the front edge. Since the difference in height between the front edge of that speed bump and its summit is only 4 inches, I should be able to make it in theory, with no suspension dive. Sadly, I will now become one of those people I always groaned at so much in the past - guys who've lowered their cars and take these bumps almost sideways at 2 m.p.h.

What you described sounds more like a curb than a speed bump! Watch out! Btw, I just picked up a Morosso 8 quart the other day. Looks like it might have some clearance issues with the ground as well.
