I was working on the disk conversion transferring the master cylinder brake rod. I read this was supposed to come out of the master cylinder without too much fuss - wrong! What a fight! I won (I think) but when the rod finally came out 3 or 4 pieces of black shrapnel came along - perhaps some kind of spring?
What is it; do I need another to reassemble?
Thx!

The flying bits were the spring retaining clip. It is there to keep the rod from falling out of the master when you lift the brake pedal. Thousands of cars are running around without it.
