My engine has like 2000 miles on it, My rear has 500 miles or so and my tranny has maybe 50 miles on it. The rear tires are 245/60/14's It might not matter much but I had just filled my tank so i was full and his mustang was almost empty.

Those new Stangs except for the Cobra are just not that fast. I don't know why but they just don't seem to put the power down.
You though must have a good combo though because you have very mild mods. Get a couple of the Camaros now! ;D

you sure about that man?
most of my buds at corral.net are running low 14s in anything past a 98.
the 99 Cobras are dogs, there were only a couple of 2000 Cobras, the 2001 GTs are pretty good.
alot of 99-2001 V6s are in the 15s.

Well, was the 2001 a badly shifted 5-spd or an auto? I think that might have made the difference. Either way, your 65 must be a fun ride.. congrats on the win. ;-)

I have a 2001 GT (5-spd), stock, which has run a 14.1 at 99 MPH... it's a very quick car once it revs over 3K.

My '65 (289 .060 over (poor old block), ported heads, RV cam, Holley 650, running through stage-2 C-4) is *much* slower... (never taken it to the strip, but I'd guess a low 15 second time) BUT it *feels* and *sounds* so much meaner that all of my friends swear it must be the fastest thing they've ever ridden in. I mean, it can break the (worn 195/70R14) tires loose in third! ;-)

It don't care what it can race, at the end of the day, the GT is still just a car, and the '65 is my eye-catching baby.

Off hand I can not remember the cam specs or the year of the heads, I have to dig up my engine sheet, The 2000 was a 5spd, he can shift good and did not seem like he messed up (but could be using wrong shift points?) All i know is I pulled on him, We went for a ride in my mustang and he said it did not feel as fast as his, and after i beat him he thought he had the win easy, Next week i will race him again. Seems everytime i pull my 65 out I have cops going down my road....

I guess it's all relative. I expected Ford to at least try and keep up with the competition in performance but they made the better business decision and designed a car that sold well. I still think they could have done both. I would have liked to see the 2000 GTs doing 13.8-14 stock with average drivers and the Cobra around 13.5. Both are around .5 seconds off that time.

The 66 I drove as a teenager turned low 14s with mild mods and 3.0 gears. This was with 289 heads. I think I had spent at the time $1100 on the car and about $3000 on the motor. My combo was not much different from Stang28965 except for my auto tranny.

yea, agreed.
general consensus is the GT engine should be base, DOHC as an option, and the 5.4 in the Cobra, but...
