I bought 15x8 Magnum 500s for my '71 convertible and will soon purchase tires. The place where I bought the wheels recommends no larger that 235-60 tires but I'm thinking of something taller and wider for the rear, am willing to do a slight lift if necessary. Any tire experts with advice on the largest size tires I can mount on these wheels? Thanks.

My truck has 15x8 Cragar S/S wheels with 275/60/15 BFG T/A radials and they sit fine.

I was thinking that I could have even gone with 295/60/15s.

Pay a visit to your local BF Goodrich dealer, they used to have a small brochure that list all of their tire sizes and recommended rim sizes. Good reference information.

By the way, welcome to Mustangsandmore...

a 275/50 would fit your wheel just fine. i wouldnt go bigger than that though.

I don't think you'll find a tire manufacturer or shop that would recommend more than a a 245 for an 8" wheel(at least for a car tire). The reason is that the wheel size changes the location where a tire takes load and stress. The manufacturer designs it to perform to the advertised levels only with the appropriate wheel size. In normal street driving it is possible that it would never make a difference. Under high stress and heat it could result in a tire failure. Your best bet is to call the tire company directly for the brand you are interested in. They might have the detailed info you need.

a 275 section width tire fits just hunky-dory on an 8" rim. It will even fit on a 7" rim too. Where you want a wider rim is for very low profile tires and for max cornering grip... actually i have 225/50-16's mounted on 9 wide rims for my Ranger...i mounted them by hand too it was tough to get air in them!

We install P-255's on 15x8 wheels regularly with great results.

Guys I know the tires fit. It was just my understanding that it is not recommended. Every time I purchased performance tires I remember asking about this and they always gave me a maximum size for the tire. Maybe it's because I've always purchased low profile performance tires.

I went to the B.F. Goodrich website after kcode mentioned it. Good info there. Saw that the Goodrich 295-65 Street-Strip tires will fit my 15x8 wheels... Hmmm. We'll see. I should have my 71 M-code convertible ready for a photo session in the next three weeks and will post it. Thanks for all the info and advice. This is about the best gear head website I've seen.

for a proper fit the wheel should be 80% the width of the tire minimum(industry standard).
a 275 width tire is 10.8 inches wide and will fit nicely on an 8" wide wheel.

A closing note here on my tire quest. I put 275x60 Dunlop GT Qualifiers on the back, 255x60 on the front. No rubbing anywhere, looks like I could have gone with the 295x60 on the back and maybe even a 295x65. The 15x8 wheels are plenty big enough, per the Goodrich website. The change in the appearance of the car is unreal and the cornering is much improved (of course). Now for the mill...
