A freind is swapping a 5.0 into his 280Z, and he asked me if I thought it'd be ok to mount the engine by the three bolts on the front of the heads. He's using head studs and the heads are aluminum. The plates under consideration will be 3/8" thich, one for each side, and the holes will be precise. (he's a machinist) So what do you all think? I said I'll be ok. Any opinions? I don't wanna give him "bumb" advise. Thanks,

SteveW

I wouldn't recommend it Steve. If ya think about it, the head bolts are very far away from the center of the crankshaft, so considerable torque would be transmitted to the mounts (a lot more than at the normal mounts, remember torque is a function of force and distance from the force). That torque will be twisting on studs that go into the block... You see how much an engine moves under load with rubber mounts. All of that force (magnified by the longer distance) would be transmitted through the head studs to the frame with no oppurtinity for dampning. (assuming solid mounts) It might very well work, but like a lot of things that 'might' work, I wouldn't want to be the one to recommend it

Steve,Charlie's right,not a good idea.Plate type mounts usually attach to holes at front of the block,not the heads.

There is a site "Small Cars with Big Motors" that has a wealth of info on swaps,including a Ford into a Z car.They even have the infamous 289 Morris there.Go take a look at:http://members.aol.com/danmas/examples.htm#nonbrit Let me know what ya think.

Thanks guys,

But if you don't use the head's threaded holes, which block holes in the front of the block should he use? TIA

Normally that kind of mounting calls for an engine plate.

I wouldn't want to add that kind of stress to the heads either.

Ahem! Excuse me guys, but take a look at the engine bay pics of MM. I use two of the head bolt holes and one of the block holes for my motor plates. No problems at all. Most of your FAST small block drag cars use a similar arrangement. Steve W. I can get you some patternes if you like. Alex

Thanks Alex! How about a pic so I can let him know which block bolt to go for.

Charlie, Jim, and SteveL;
When you think about it the farther from the centerline of the crank, the more leverage your mounts have to control the engine's torque with less strain on the mounts. But it would be better to include a block bolt.

Thanks all,

SteveW
