How can I determine where I'm getting a bad vibration from in my driveline. It happens at between 65-80mph. I've replaced both uni joints, it improved slightly but is still very bad.

Thanks,
Paul

Any leaking seals?

Does it vibrate at that speed in neutral?

Paul,
Another item to check is lay under the car and push up and down on the forward end of the driveshaft, to see if there is play in the yoke going into the transmission.
You didn't say if this happened all of a sudden or has this started getting worse? Do you have a manual or automatic? This will help get us closer to the cause.

Paul:

Are you sure it's the drive line?

I had the same problem as you. After replacing both axles, balancing the drive shaft, checking universal joints, swapping out the center section (for another reason), new tranny mount and balancing all 4 wheels twice, I finally found my problem. I put my spare tire on and rotated it around to each postion. The car was still shaking after three tries. At the four position, the shake went away. I took the bad wheel to yet another shop who told me it was too bent to balance!!!

My advice is to double check the wheels.

The transmission seal is OK. The vibration is still there in neutral. I noticed it straight after I replaced the 3.50 gear with a 4.30 gear.

Well at least we know the area to look in, and like john said check the wheels first. Besides the gears did you change anything else like the axle bearings?

If nothing there you will need to go back to the third member for the problem. There is alot of things to go wrong there, believe me I just changed out my 3.00 gears for some 3.50. If you have to pull it do alot of checks before disassembly, Bearing preloads, backlash, etc..

Two questions: Did you do this yourself? And did you follow a good breakin procedure of driving the car and then letting it sit? I have heard that the gears get pretty hot at first and need this breakin.

This is going to sounf stupid but bear with me. On my '70, the pinion yoke doesn't fit ANY u-joint well, lots of slop(about .015 worth) and if the u-joint isn't centered it will try to shake your teeth out over 40 mph. I have changed yokes and found one a little better, but still not great, all the old factory stuff I have is just that, OLD.
Just a thought

Was going to check things out today (Sunday), but found out there was a drag boat meet on so decided to go to that. Unfortunately the fuel pump in the wifes car s$$t itself (in the middle of nowhere) so I spent a couple of hours fixing that. Gave up on the idea of seeing the boats (ie too late) so spent the rest of the afternoon drinking beer....oh well maybee tomorrow.
