OK guys I jacked up the right rear wheel with the car out of gear and the wheel would turn and the drive shaft turned. But when I put it in gear it clicked a couple of times when I tried to turn it, then it would not turn at all. I did the same with the left rear no clicks but it also would not turn.I then jacked up both wheels with the car still in gear and turned the left rear and the right turned the opposite way......tell me if I have an open rear or something else please.......

If they turn in opposite directions then you do not have a posi. Alex------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator Fleet of FoMoCo's too long to list! http://superstockers.homestead.com/week.html

Didn't you say that when you punch it, the car leaves burners from both tires? Would a malfunctioning limited slip allow you to do both? I have no idea, just posing a question to the guru's.

then why would it leave two black marks cause I thought an open would only spin one wheel sorry for all the silly questions but I really dont know much about rear ends and I am trying to decide whether or not to spent the money on the cobrajet axles I have found that will go with the 350:1 traction loc center section that I already have

dhearn,You might have a "locker" in the rear. I've never checked any of my locker equipped rears in the way you checked yours. I'll get back to you tommorrow. Open it up and check it out! Can you do the ring gear swap I spelled out in your last thread? ------------------ SteveW So many Chebbies, so little time! M&M member #427

a Detroit Locker wont turn the other side backwards ,but it will allow one side to turn without the other side when you check it without the tires on ground since it'll be unlocked. Some other types like Gleason Torsen and GoldTrack are like this too,it takes driving force to lock them. A normal posi does too...there isnt much preload, and when the clutches are worn as in most cases (they don't last!) it will behave as a non-posi when jacking the wheels up,even tho the thrust from the spiders may still allow it to engage under load. Easiest way to tell...take filler plug out of the side of the third member, look in the hole...if the bolt heads are 5/8" and surrounded by a raised ridge...posi ... if 3/4" heads and sitting on open flat area it is an open...or perhaps a non stock unit.

I am confused. I have a 9" rear end that I can turn the pinion and both wheels rotate the same direction, if I turn one wheel the other will for the most part not move (ocasionally move in the same direction for a limited time though). Is it likely that this is a worn out traction lock or is it because I have both wheels off the ground. Also, if it is worn out would I harm the rear end further by using it now without repairing. Thanks for the help as I to am a novice at this.

Nash,Yours is a worn Trac Lock, and you won't damage it further by driving it. SteveW

You'll just polish up the steels and lap the ring and pinion a bit... ------------------ SteveLaRiviere/Webmaster -- MCA # 47773

SteveL,Only when he turns LOL SteveW p.s. Steve L has a good point, the metal fragments (if it's that bad) in the oil wearing out the bearings and gears. You may want to change the gear oil and if you find metal, get it repaired to save the rest of the parts. [This message has been edited by steve'66 (edited 11-30-2000).]
