what do I have I would like to know but I dont want to disassemble it now my rear end is a 9 in. in a 69 mach1 door tag says it should be a 300:1 open and it looks like it hasn't been out(maybe?) but I just got it running for the first time and it will leave two real nice black marks on dry asphalt, I have allways been led to believe that an open diff will only leave one ???????????????

Correct, an open will only spin the right rear.

Is there a tag on the chunk at the 1 o'clock position?

If so, on the bottom left of the tag it would read 3L00, with the 'L' signifying Limited Slip.

Another test: Jack up one side, and if you can turn the wheel, it's open, if not, it's limited slip.

If the tag is still there, the # on the lower left is it. 3L00, for example is a 3.00.

Without a tag, chock the front wheels, jack up both rear wheels, put the trans in neutral, and turn the driveshaft clockwise {facing the rear of the car} and count the revolutions of the driveshaft vs the wheel. A 3.00 will spin the wheel once for every 3.00 revolutions of the driveshaft.

that is what I did when I got 1.5 turns to 1 wheel turn but I did it with the driveshaft disconnected.

dhearn,

You could put your 3.50 gear set on your existing differential and use your existing axles. You could have it done for under $200 labor, or we could "talk you through it". And welcome to M&M!!

I will agree with Steve, with his help and alot of others I have my third member built and ready to install with 3.50 gears and a traction loc.
The only thing I will say about setting up the gears is you better have a big breaker bar setup to crush the pinion sleeve

Clark,

Glad that worked out for you, Congratulations.

dhearn,

Your gear swap will be easy, because you can leave the 3.50 pinion gear in it's case and you won't have to worry about pinion depth or the crush sleeve. Just put the 3.50 ring gear on the TracLoc differential, and install it in the 3.50's case. Then adjust the ring gear and bearing preload. "peice of cake"
