Just wondering if any of the experts around here could give me the heads up on a piece of debris.

After my H.V. Mellings oil pump quit pumping--on the highway--the tear down that ensued revealed one broken H.D. Chromemoly oil pump drive shaft, and one locked up oil pump.

Inside the oil pump I found a piece of metal that most closely resembles a quarter inch long section of paper clip wire. On one end is an odd fracture that shows that it did indeed break off from a larger piece.

Any ideas about it being an engine part or just a foreign object? After replacing the part and the shaft, the engine seems to have made a full recovery. Whew!

Thanks for the help guys.

ps...I also posted this to see what sort of strange user designation I would get, I was here in the beginning, but have been away for some time.

Doc,

How about a peice of the wire retainer from a hydraulic lifter?? I could see that fishing its way through the pickup screen. Welcome back and don't be a stranger!

Hey! I'M an "ESTEEMED MEMBER"...cool.

Thanks Steve...so far that has been the only thing I can think of. Right now I am just fishing for ideas.

I plan on having the intake off this next weekend (efi swap), and you can bet I will be looking closely at the lifters.

Could it be a small piece off your pickup screen?

I am going to back up that lifter clip prediction. Do you have roller lifters? Maybe a needle bearing?

rainwater...I didn't notice anything wrong with the pickup screen, but that is another good guess.

jkilroy....yes I do have roller lifters, and needle bearing is one of the first things to come to mind when I look at the part, but I would suspect total failure of a lifter to find a bearing like this...wouldn't I???

Like I said before, I will have the intake off next weekend, and I will pull all the lifters and give them a close inspection. Thanks guys.

Did maybe someone that doesn't like you just put a paper clip(s) down your carburator? Alex

Did you put a magnet to it to see if it was ferrous?

I can sympathize with your problem. I just finished reinstalling the 5.0 HO back into my son's 90 Lincoln MKVII LSC. His oil pump driveshaft had sheared. I found three identical pieces of steel in the engine, two in the pan and one in the pump. They weren't pieces of wire, though. They were 3/16" dia.X .060 thick. If you look at the top of a Fram oil filter, they look almost identical to the size and thickness of the holes in the steel plate at the top of the filter where the threaded boss is, if those holes were punched in the plate. Anyway, a LOT of work and about $180 later the engine is back in the car.

It could be a retainer for a valve seal, though I'd bet my money on a lifter retainer. I also have a roller motor, and I had one of my roller lifters explode when the retainer broke so be careful.

OUCH, I guess this happens more often than I would have thought. The more I look at the piece, the more certain I am of it being a part of the lifter retaining clip.

I got sick over Thanksgiving and did not get the chance to open the engine up, so I hope it holds together for a couple more weeks until Christmas--I will have a whole week to work on it then. Thanks for the help guys.
Doc.
