I just wanted to re-state my affection for my 66 coupe with a 351c 4v in it. I'm still in the break-in phase so I have not gone past 5000rpm but it sure wants to. It has recently gotten very cold here in Arizona. You know 40-50 degrees. Well my car loves it. It runs like a bat out of hell. It is all I can do to keep it close to the speed limit. It is true that the C doesn't have a lot of low end power, but in a light car like the 66 it is perfect. I just can't wait to start pushing the car to its limits. I suspect I will end up dead or in jail, but that's a small price to pay. The next time I hear someone tell me how hard it is to get cleveland parts or how expensive it is to modify, I'm going to shoot them. The cleveland is the best bang for the buck I've come across. Long live the cleveland.Later, Boss66

I read in another one of your posts that you have 3:73 gears in the rear. I assume that you have a 4 speed? What kind of RPM's are you running at 70 in 4th gear? Do you feel that the 4V heads, with your set-up, are better for high speed highway driving? With the gears you have (I know you haven't gone above 5 grand) do you feel it still pulling at high speeds? I am interested in seeing what the difference will be when you put the 4:56 gears in. That should be cool. Make sure you get it to the track before you switch them out, and then let us know what the difference is on the highway and at the track. Once you get the traction fixed, it will be interesting to see if you can top the mid 12's that Steve66's daughter has ran in her 66. I am not trying to start a shootout here, I am just interested in your setup because it is a Cleveland with iron 4V heads, whereas they are running a 351W with Edelbrock Performer RPM heads. All things being the same (car, rear-end, tranny) it will be interesting to see if the performance is comparable. Anyone else who has a comparable set-up (car, motor, tranny, rear-end, suspension) let us know how your car runs on the highway and at the track so people like me can pick and choose which way to go when the time comes!! I am personally torn between building a track monster, a daily driver, or a combination of both. In any event, I wish my 66 was finished so that I could be tearing up the streets like you are right now. Enjoy!!!!!!!

gearing is not just personal experience... there is an exact science to figure it out... MATH ... one of those "3 R's" Every engine will have a sweet spot it likes to run in best... my long stroke 428 is happiest at 2500 but will run fine for hours at 4000+ rpm on the highway... either reasonably fast or lets say i had 4.56 gears instead It really doesn't affect mileage all that much, at higher RPM the engine is efficient and hardly loaded, ie: high vacuum. Take a look at economy cars, many of those 5 speeds are not overdrives and rear end (or front as case may be) gears car be 3.7 to 4-- range ... Volkswagen Microbusses had 4.57 gears and that never stopped the hippies from wanting to drive to Big Sur [This message has been edited by TomP (edited 11-07-2000).]

I've got a 9" rear with 3.70 gears, Toploader 4 speed, just a little past stock 351c 4v (72 HO), Performer intake, Holley 750, MSD, electric fan, manual brakes/steering, no A/c. I really didn't build it for the track, but I'm certainly getting hooked on speed after listening to you all everyday. I doubt my car would be all that impressive at the track. First, I don't have any experience racing. Second, I don't have a locking rearend. Third, I have basically stock suspension except for I've replaced all the rubber with polyurethane. Having said all that, when I'm cruising down the highway and downshift to third and smash on the pedal there isn't too many cars in this town that will stay with me or even close. I suspect if I bought some wider tires, a Detroit locker, spun it up to 8000rpm with a good driver, the results would be quite impressive. Later, Boss66
