Hey I'm about to get a 71 F350 that I would like to convert ofer to 4wd. It has a 390 with a four speed. I will need to keep it as a 4 speed because of the PTO attachment on the side of the trans that powers the winch. Oh, I forgot to mention that it has a Holmes 440 wrecker body on the back. I have wanted a wrecker since I was a kid. I don't have much use for it but since it seemed like a good deal I talked my self in to it. The only problem is, I really want a 4x4. I know I will probably need a donor vehicle but I don't know what years will be compatible. Did the 71 F350s with 4x4 have leafs or coils in the front. I really must have a straight front axle. I know there will be some welding and fabrication and some drive line work. None of that scares me, I just need some advice. Thanks in advance for any comments.

Only the F100 had the coil spring front end, the F250&350 had leaf springs. I think you may want to do some research before starting a 4x4 conversion on a 2wd chassis. First off, the front frame section is totally different, the 2wd has a huge crossmember under the engine, (for the Twin I beam), the 4x4 is wide open under the engine, with 2 stubs for the motor mounts to attatch to. Also 2wds have the steering box behind the front suspension, a 4x4 has the box way up front, ahead of the engine. Personally too much work for me!!------------------ 78 Fairmont 428 4 speed [email protected] 1.32 60 foot 80 Fairmont 302 5 speed 12.8@105mph 85 Mustang NHRA M/Stock 302 5speed. Thanks for the input. Yeah, it sounds like too much work for me too. If I find a donor vehicle I would be better off to just change the bed.Again thanks.
