Hey guys I'm starting to look around for something used to replace my trusty old 1982 F-100...I've noticed that the newer style (97 and up) can be bought fairly cheaply with a V-6 but I don't know anyone who's owned one.How are these things for mileage and power?------------------ 68 J-Code,Sprint,306 4 speed,4.11s 13.69@101............... 66 coupe 289 4 speed, 3.20 cruiser http://mustangsandmore.50megs.com/MembersPics/mustangboy.html http://mustangsandmore.50megs.com/MembersPics/mustangboy2.html

The later trucks tend to be heavier depending on what model you consider. Therefore the throttle response will not be like you may be use to. The V6 has the dual intake runner system to enhance torque and higher rpm running with special runner controllers. As for fuel milage, they are not a whole lot better given the weight etc. You will be entering a whole new world with PCM conrol and the electronic controlled transmissions but have to sooner or later. Just to start, there are well over 1000 DTC codes already and these systems are already obsolete with the 04 year. Good luck.

one of the guys I work with has a 98 F150 with a 4.2 V6 and automatic, and he is quite happy with it. He bought it new. He has a small 5th wheel travel trailer that he tows with it on short trips (300 mile max), and says it could use more power while towing, plus the towing mileage is no better than a 4.6 V8, but he has had no problems with the truck to date.------------------ 78 Fairmont 428 4 speed [email protected] 1.32 60 foot 80 Fairmont 302 5 speed 12.8@105mph 85 Mustang NHRA M/Stock 302 5speed. They are probably ok for a commuter bang around truck.

It's all in the gearing.I drove a v6,5spd '97 w/3.55 gears and it felt really good.Father in laws '99 is auto but it feels pretty strong too.

The 97's and 98's had some trouble with leaking lower intake and timing cover gaskets, causing them to suffer from hydraulic lock. So be aware of that. Ford switched to the plastic intake manifold in 2003 I think. I have been very happy with my 1999 supercab w/ 5 spd manual. It towed my 69 mustang on a 1000# trailer with little trouble.

Thanks for the replies.I would be looking to tow the 68 coupe to the strip occasionally on an open trailer. That's probably about as heavy a workout as the truck would get.------------------ 68 J-Code,Sprint,306 4 speed,4.11s 13.69@101............... 66 coupe 289 4 speed, 3.20 cruiser http://mustangsandmore.50megs.com/MembersPics/mustangboy.html http://mustangsandmore.50megs.com/MembersPics/mustangboy2.html

V6 in a full-size pickup? IMO, they shouldn't even be produced. No power, no torque, gets same mileage as a smaller V8. I had a '95 F150 (leased from Ford) 4.9 I-6/5 speed. Towed my Maverick everywhere and anywhere...but didnt' pass too many gas stations. Traded it for a '97 F150 4.2/5 speed. Mistake. The 4.2 just does not have the power that the 4.9 did. Even on the third motor, it just could not do what the trusty big six would do. The '97 was also a lease truck. Lease ran out, Ford bought the truck back at a reduced cost (I owed a little) because of engine concerns, and I never looked back. Bought a used 95 F150 5.0/M5OD (POS) 5 speed reg cab. Tows nearly as well as the 4.9 did, but much nicer fuel economy to the tune of 24 mpg unloaded. Won't own another V6 full size. Dad's '00 F150 (also a lease...but he bought it when the lease was up)..5.4 auto ext cab 4x2...tows like a dream. In fact, with my Maverick behind it I have to force myself to look back to see if it's still back there.
