Im going to look at a truck (my only interest is the engine/trans) later this week advertised in local classifieds. Says its a 1977 F-150 with 429 ?? Those were out by then no?? Should be a 460 if originally installed, yes?? Its a beater, asking price is $400.00.

Yes, it should be a 460 if it's factory, but if it was swapped, they could have fit most anything into it.

Wow, maybe good news. Just talked to the kid that actually owns the truck. Says that the original 460 broke years ago, and a friend installed " a 429 from an old Torino for more power". Man, I cannot wait to see this thing.

Went and looked at it. I believe the casting number on one of the heads was D3VE, so a 73 or so. For $300.00 (whole truck) not bad I think.

Though I think Im just talking to myself, I will end this with its now mine. All D3 codes that I see so far. Think its a 460. Now to see how tight of a fit in the Cougar and see if I want to go big block.

The only difference between a 429 and 460 is the crank and pistons.I don't know what year Cougar but motor mounts might be a problem. A 429/460 will fit '67 and up Cougar engine bays. I dropped a 429 in my '78 F-150 back in 1987. It has over 215,000 miles on it now. The truck shows over 305,000. Tracy

Thanks DT. I know the differences in the 429/460, but thanks again. The kid I bought it off of said the original motor (460) was replaced with an older 429. Once I get it out and look at the short block I will know for sure. My Cat is a 69, just want to see if I want to hassle with the clearance issues or not.

There should be numbers on the crank to tell what it is. What they are,I don't know. Does the kid know what model car it came from? There were some 460's put in some P/I Torinos in 1976.
