If you exceed recommended speeds while in 4x4 low, will that cause the service engine soon light to come on? My wife didn't understand how to get the truck out of 4x4 low and went to work (local) in 4x4 low. The truck (2001 Expedition) now has the service light on. So:1. What's your guess on the code it threw? 2. Do you think she did damage (it's out of 4x4 now and seems to ride ok)? 3. Will hooking up a code reader clear the code?

I doubt she did anything bad. It probably has a redline limit on the motor and tripped an error on the ECU. I don't know what code you'll get,but you could probably clear it by unhooking the battery. Isn't the 4WD selector a knob on the dash?

She slid off the side of the driveway (new house) I guess and popped it over to the 4x4L setting (yes, dash switch) in a panic not to go into the ditch. Then she popped it back out once she was on the road again, but couldn't get the hubs to disengage despite the dash setting. It is harder than you would think. Typically, you just put them in reverse, but this thing is a little more involved. You have to put it in Neutral or park also. She swears she didn't crack 3k rpms, and it's only about 4 miles to work, so I'm not thinking she did any damage either, but I don't have a clue what that code would be unless there's a speed limit in that mode? I'm going to try to see if my code reader will fit her truck and see what it threw. I'm kinda curious. I didn't know about the battery though, that's good to know. I thought it stored them in a EEPROM which wouldn't erase through a loss of power? Maybe they're still stored, but that resets the dash light?

Like Mike said, disconnect the battery, turn on the headlights, go have lunch, hook it all back up, and fire that sucker up. You'll have to re-do your radio pre-sets and clock. I think I'd rather have the code read, just to cure my curiosity. You can take it to a Advance Auto Parts or any other of those big chains that'll read your codes for free. They'll rest them too.------------------ -Paul 70 Mach1 351C/FMX 79 Ranchero GT 302 smogger/C4 97 Expedition XLT 5.4 00 SVT f150 Lightning 4149 of 4966 Born on: 06/26/2000 'If you're not the lead dog, the view never changes.'

Better yet, on modern OBD systems, they reset themselves if the vehicle has {I think} 3 restarts without the symptom of the trouble detected.------------------ '70 Mustang Mach 1 351C 4V/FMX/3.25 Open '70 Mustang Convertible 250 I6/3 speed/2.79 Open '72 Mustang Sprint Hardtop 351C 4V/FMX/4.30 Trac Loc '94 F-150 XL 5.8L/E4OD/3.55 Limited Slip

You may want to check the owners manual for any directions on disengaging techniques.... I thought you had to backup ~20 ft to disengage the front axles??? Ryan
