I've got a 83 F250 4X4 XLT 351W extcab. I'm building a 408W to go in it and need an overdrive. Will a ZF 5sp work in place of the newprocess or would I be better off using a USGear overdrive? I would rather use the ZF 5sp. [cheaper]

Is that a New Process 435? If it is,it's the stronger trans. The ZF would work, but I think you would end up tearing it up.

Quite honestly I'm not in the know with standard transmissions. The 435 has a granny low,and the heavier trucks use them. Not sure what the 445 is. What you should look for are the sizes of the input shafts. that is how these are usually judged.

Your application will tell you what you need. Are you pulling or hauling heavy loads?

the transmission I've been looking at is on ebay. ZF S5-42 or S5-47 HD 5sp manual 2WD-4WD for F250,350,450 are these weak?

I wouldn't think so, if they used them on the F350 and F450.

now if I can figure out the dimenions and if my manual clutch will work. With my 4.11 gears I will never get better gas milage. That's why I'm going with an over drive and more cubic in. with low end torque.
