am stumped on what to get, maybe someone has some suggestions to make this easier.
I have the opportunity to buy a 74 F100, I love the look of these trucks for some reason, I want to do a minor freshen up on it & not spend too much money on it, cheapo paint job & pull out the tired gas guzzling 360 & c6 & throw in the fresh mildly hopped up 302 & c4 from my 68 cougar ((Cougar is hibernating for a year or 2 or 3 until I get it completely restored & its getting a 351W & aod or tko anyway)) I know some of you may say the 302/c4 is too weak for that truck but all I would do is haul around a dirtbike in summer & skidoo in winter. BUT I also have the opportunity to buy a 4X4 an 84 XLT Lariat, I sure wouldnt mind 4x4 but I know gas milage would be down because the guy told me it has a 351M, does that make sense? I dotn remember what years they make the 351M, I know our 81 f100 has one, has a million miles on it but hard on fuel & kind of gutless. SO the thing is, should I go for the older truck where I would spend a little more money on it in the beginning? Or the newer one that costs a little more & would get bad gas milage BUT have the luxuries of 4x4 and maybe a little more reliability because it was well taken care of, is newer & has few miles. anyone help?

I believe the '81 was the last year for the 400, so that engine has been replaced. If you don't really need a 4x4, why have all that hardware to carry around.

If the '74 has little or no rust, it's a better truck in my opinion. I'd even leave the 360 there and just drive it.
