As you know, I'm repainting my truck Midnight Jade, a dark green. The "FORD" letters on the tailgate (the ones stamped out of the sheetmetal) should be white, and I planned on painting the white on. I was debating which color to paint on first and how to mask it when I got the new NPD Ford Truck catalog and saw they sell transfer emblems for the tailgate. Basically, I can put the FORD back on the tailgate in white as easy as putting on a transfer "stripe" or decal, however you would describe it. Is the transfer emblem the way the factory did it, or was the "FORD" tailgate letters painted?I also heard the suggestion to paint the entire tailgate green first, then paint the strips white, then paint green again, and then sand the green off the letters, revealing the white. Works if the letters are perfectly flat, and beats masking, but the transfer emblems NPD sells for 17 bucks takes the cake if that's the way its supposed to be done.

Yes...FORD used these transfers for most tailgates and as I remember (depending on year) there was more than just white offered. You can also get these transfer kits (3M) from most large paint suppliers.

All the tailgates I've seen 1979 and older were painted white over the color.Tracy ------------------ Tracy M&M #245 MAC OS9.1 / Earthlink 1956 F-100 Panel w/429 (3.50 9") 1966 F-100 SWB w/351C (3.25 9" - 3.70 posi for Saturday nights) Music City F-100's, 1965 GT-350 S/C (2.78 1st & 3.70 TracLok 9") Music City Mustang Club Don't focus on the destination....make the JOURNEY the adventure Visit my Web site: DidgeyTrucker's Website

Tracy, Are you confirming that the color of the letters was white, or that the letters were painted vice a decal, or both?Sam

There were also decals available, depending on the package. I had an '86 that was Dark Canyon Red with Antique White trim, and it had red decals from the factory {I bought it new} on the tailgate. When I had it repainted, I left it white, which I thought looked a lot better.------------------ '70 Mustang Mach 1 - '70 Mustang Convertible - '72 Mustang Sprint - '94 F-150
