That's a wide engine. The 351M is the same in external dimension as the 400. You also need to use the C6 transmission with this engine, and that's a big one too. I notice that Kaufmann sells a swap kit for 302s, but nothing bigger. http://www.kaufmannproducts.com/rangersw.htm If there's enough room for the width, I think you can use the small block motor mounts Kaufmann sells because I am pretty sure they are the same: http://www.kaufmannproducts.com/Web%20Page%20Pics/ranger%20v8%20mounts.jpg Welcome to M&M! ------------------ '70 Mustang Mach 1, '72 Mustang Sprint, '94 F-150 Pics MCA Member # 47773

It will work, as long as it fits in the transmission tunnel. I don't know how tight they are. You'll also need an oil pan and oil pickup from a 4x4 pickup with a 351M. {rear sump} ------------------ '70 Mustang Mach 1, '72 Mustang Sprint, '94 F-150 Pics MCA Member # 47773

You'll want to do some measuring too. The exhaust will probably give you the most headaches.

thanks for the help. -how much do you think it will cost me to do the swap? -is it worth it to put a 351m in a ranger? -what motor swap would be the better choice in a ranger(think speed)?

Hello, fellow Mainer! How much it will cost is hard to answer, but the general rule of cars/trucks is that it will be 2-3 times more than you think. I think a 302 would make a better swap, because it will be easier to swap and easier to make more power from. ------------------ '70 Mustang Mach 1, '72 Mustang Sprint, '94 F-150 Pics MCA Member # 47773

Speaking as a guy that drives a 302 Ranger every day... NO!! Don't attempt that...a 351M puts out about the same power as a 2.3, weighs as much as a 460 and fits like one. It's an awful swap. But if you insist... heater probably needs to be gotten rid of completely, the air plenum gets cut down a bunch just to fit a 302. The weight is going to make the truck a nose heavy turd for normal driving... expect a very bad weight distribution, my 87 shortbox 302 with a bunch of lightweight parts is 1765lbs front, 1080 rear empty, you will worsen that to 2000lbs front weight. The C6 is going to require a bunch of firewall chopping to clear that tall bellhousing, motor mounts would need to be made up. The left rear ports are going to be in the way of the steering, you'll need to move the column and use custom U-joints to avoid the head. Headers will need to be made if the exhaust manifolds don't clear (nobody has tried) Best bet is to sell that 351 and buy a 302, much more satisfying swap.
