What compression would I have with the same pistons. Any thing else need tending too besides the standard blueprinting. New to mid blocks and not sure of head or cyl. volumes from the factory. It's a 73 Ford F100. Thanks

I found a kit for the 390 from autozone for $420. I can get a 390 crank for $125. Is this all I need? I'm gonna do a good 3-angle on the heads and open up the bowls to match the increased cubes. I Also plan to get the RV type puller cam to match. Anything else needed? I'm really worried about the final comp. ratio. Need 8.75 or 9 to 1.

the 360 rods are longer and scrawnier than 390's . They'll need to be replaced along with the crank and pistons, everything else fits the same. Tom

It sounds like you were planning on re using your 360 pistons, however you can`t do that. The 352& 360 pistons have a full skirt, which will hit the crankshaft counterweights on the 390`s longer stroke crank. The 390 pistons have skirts which have extra clearance built in. As TomP said, the rods will need to be changed to the shorter 390-428 style. The extra 30 cubes are well worth the effort, however. I haul my race car on the back of a 74 F350 dual rear wheel "ramp truck", with a 4 speed & 4.10 Dana 70 diff. For the first few years, I used the stock 360, but it really laboured on some of the long, steep hills up in the mountains going to one particular dragstrip.I found an original 75or 76 390 4V truck engine, & rebuilt it, & put it in (11 years ago, now). Granted, the 390 has headers & dual exhaust, & a mild "RV" type cam, along with a stock iron "S" 4 barrel intake, but it felt like the truck had double the power of the old 360, hills that used to require downshifting into 3rd, & dropping 20-30 mph, can be taken in high gear, maintaining 50 mph. Plus the mileage isn`t any worse. My loaded truck goes down the road at between 10,000 & 11,000 lbs, depending on tools, parts, extra people, etc. My 390 has the low compression (410) pistons, a higher compression engine would be even better.------------------ 78 Fairmont 428 4 speed 10.20@130mph 80 Fairmont 302 5 speed 12.8@105mph 85 Mustang NHRA Stocker under construction, 302 5 speed

BUMMER!I was hoping I could just get the 390 rebuild kit and drop in the 390 crank and go. How much longer are the rods? Could I machine the 390 piston tops to get the comp back under control.....to 9.5:1 Maybe?
