By far one of the ugliest has to be the 69-70 Merc Maurader. Also, any big Ford built from 73-78. Some of the Merc Marquis 2 drs were OK, but those LTD's were U G L Y! ------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver MCA member# 53321 NHRA and IHRA SS/LA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,&'03 Fleet of FoMoCo products including 88 ASC McLaren Mustang #28 Professional Manwhore The Barry of BarrysGrrl Quote #1: "I never met a magazine mechanic I liked." The ugly big car that most sticks in my mind is the 57 Mercury. The 56 Merc and 56 Ford were a very nice design and the 57 Ford was one of my favorite all time big Fords. But the 57 Merc looked like a practical joke. I have always wondered why it seems that all brands and each of the product lines within brands will build good looking cars for several years and then suddenly produce some of the worst monstrosities for an equal number of years. Maybe they shoot their stylists every five years or so. John [This message has been edited by JCQuinn@work (edited 02-27-2003).]

I think Steve meant the 60-62 Mercs, Alex. They hade "Interesting" (to say the least :rolleyes styling. I can`t imagine ANYONE not liking the 63&64 Maurader fastbacks, they are just too cool! I`m off on holidays this week, trying to get the Mustang ready for the strip, but I went back to that "Oldies" wrecking yard in Washington State again today, & after looking at the 59 Lincoln Continental in the yard, I figure that has to be near the peak of the "ugly Ford list" Of course, with so many 50`s & early 60`s MoPars & Buicks in the yard, the Lincoln is far from an overall frontrunner!!------------------ 78 Fairmont 428 4 speed 10.20@130mph 80 Fairmont 302 5 speed 12.8@105mph 85 Mustang NHRA Stocker under construction, 302 5 speed 59 Meteor (Canadian Ford) 2 dr sedan 332, auto 74 F350 ramp truck 390 4spd

The 1960 EDSEL had to be one of the ugliest things Henry ever strung a wiring harness through. That car had ugly that it hasn't even used yet. I had sex with a girl in the backseat of one once and she had to dream she was in another car... ...hey...wait a minute...

I vote the late 50's Lincolns, the 74-75 Tbirds and Merc Marquis, and the early 80's Crown Vics. In the small car,a 61-62 Falcon, but the one I hate the most,is a 65 Fairlane. Who came up with that?

Can you tell me what trans was used on this application? Was it factory assembly? Were the rocker covers stamped FORD or were they plain? ------------------ I am looking for information concerning factory performance/speed parts used on the MEL (Mercury-Edsel-Lincoln) Engine Series (383-410-430-462) from 1958 thru 1968.

I am not a fan of the 'square-birds', but they don't look all THAT bad. (to me, anyway). I have a 79 MK-V that I think looks great. It's been painted in the Bill Blass scheme. Dark metallic blue, chamois-colored half-vinyl roof and chamois-colored trunk padding on the 'Continental kit.' The vinyl moldings match the roof and trunk-lid padding. I bought this car about 16 years ago with only 55,000 miles on it. It was originally a 'Cartier' edition. All cream-colored paint and vinyl. OK looking, but not real 'classy' looking. The new color scheme looks much, much better. When I was younger, I always thought these cars were about the butt-ugliest cars ever made. One sunny day many years later I saw a Bill Blass rolling down the road, and it just struck me as a great looking car! I kept my eye out for a MK-V, and when a good opportunity came up few years later, I jumped on it! I got the car for $1,000. It sat in the owners garage for many yeras because he thought the 'hydro-boost' system on the brakes was bad and that it would cost over $3,000 to fix!( His son told him that!). I took a chance and bought the car, and it turned out that it was just the master cylinder that needed replacing. $18.00! Ten minutes to install! That car is now approaching 300,000 miles and has never let me down. It is by far the best riding, most comfortable car I have ever ridden in. My company car is a new Grand Marquis, but I like the ride of the Mk better. It's gonna need another paint job soon, as this one is about 10 years old and has over 150,000 miles on it. It has almost zero resale value, so there is no reason for me to get rid of it. I figure in another 5-10 years, it may start to get a little collectibility and noteriety going for it. Who knows? I'll keep driving it and see!

By early 80's do you mean the Fox chassis LTDs and Grand Marquis? (I like those.). '62 Falcon is almost Identical to the '63 (the '60 and '61s are ugly.)..... I have a '62 2dr Wagon... The '65 Fairlane is MUCH better looking than the '63 ever was.

WHOA! You are just wrong, damn it! Look closer. You may object to one model of the 57 Merc, of which there were many. OK, I might be prejudiced -- it was my first car, a 4-dr Monterey. But what the hell is wrong?OK the bumper pods may have looked a little dumb. Other than that, what's wrong? It was classic 57 styling. WTF? I agree about the 56s. Check out the Monterey -- I think you are thinking about the Turnpike Cruiser, which I believe had the undershot roll-down back window. I never liked that. But...? I would love to find an old Monterey. -j quote: Originally posted by JCQuinn@work: The ugly big car that most sticks in my mind is the 57 Mercury. It took me a lot longer to like the bullet birds than it did the square birds, but I'm fine with both of them now. I'm still more partial to the square than the bullet, but not overwhelmingly so. OTOH, the 4 door suckermouth, now, unless someone GIVES me one -- I doubt I'll ever be able to wrap my mind around that monstrosity. -jc
