I just stumbled onto this site and hope to get lots of good info from it.
I just picked up a 70 cyclone spoiler, 429CJ, 4sp, drag pack car. The story is it has been stored inside since '71. The 1st owner thought he tossed a rod but just blew up the clutch. The last guy put 5K into the motor anyway and warmed it up a bit. The car basicly needs put back together and painted.
Any info on parts or anything else about this car would be great

I would love any info you have. I do know where there is a standard 429 and 4sp out of a 70 torino, motor needs rebuilt but would make a good combo for your car.

rims?? HUGE!! The fronts can't take more than about 4 3/4" backspacing before you get too close to the ball joint,an 8" wide rim will easily fit

ahhh to clarify that last one... backspacing should be pretty close to 4 3/4" for an 8" wide rim, i've seen 10" wide rims fit the rear but clearance is tight so measure tires first.

I guess our resident "Cyclone Chick" Suzy Q is off making more homemade soaps and hasn't noticed this topic??

well i was looking at trying at least 15X8.5 in the back and hopefully 15X10s. so maybe 15X8.5s will work in the front and maybe 15X10s in the back??...that would be ideal for me.
I do want to run the torq-thrust Ds...which have 15X8.5, 15X7, and 15X10...all with 3.75 back spacing.

Cyclone chick here!

Sounds like you got yourself a beauty there! I have a 69 Cyclone spoiler, 390 4 speed, and looked for 6 years for parts. There are several sites that might be able to help you.

http://users.nowonline.net/cyclone/WELCOME.htm

There is a lot of info on the Cylone here. I was able to find parts for my Cyclone thru JC Whitney. I get the catalog but check out the web site too.

Also, you can check out these sites, they have cyclone parts:

http://www.perogie.com/
http://www.limic.com/fordpage.html

This site has some great links:

http://www.car-stuff.com/carlinks/classic.htm

I also signed up with a cyclone/comet e-groups thru Yahoo where cyclone and comet owners email each other.

Consider signing up as a IMOA member (International Mercury Owners Association) the yearly membership is like $35.00 and they send you quarterly magazines and a parts directory which is really good. They are meeting in Carlisle PA this Spring (June).

Feel free to email me privately if you wish, I keep in touch with many Cyclone owners across the country. My husband does auto body if you need advice in that area also.

Good luck!!!!!!

BTW, I got most of my help on finding parts right here at M&M in this forum. There are great people here that are always willing to help!

...husband (sigh) yes ,she's spoken for

anyways... ... wider than 7" ,those 3 3/4" backspacing wheels are gonna hang out the fenders like the tiny gold wires the yahoo's stick on a mini truck.

A 15 x 8.5 will fit the front but needs more backspacing to avoid fender rubbing.

The only way a 10" rim with 3 3/4" backspace will fit the rear is by narrowing the rear end.... feasible, axles a bit shorter are easy enough to find., cut housing down to suit.

I believe the Torq-thrust II's are available in more backspacings

yeah i know you can get the II's in more setups but i don't want chrome wheels. Halibrands look about the same as the D's and have more options, guess i will look more at those.
thanks for all the info

Check with Wheel Vintiques about their custom-sized Magnums. I think '70-'71 Cyclones look their best with the 15" (and up) Magnum 500's. IMHO

Well some basics:
.03" over
ARP bolts throughout
forged flattops
solid comp cam(can't find #s)
stock CJ heads with hardened seats
Sharp roller rockers/hardened pushrods
double roller timing chain
weiand stealth intake
850CFM holley dual feed double pumper/mechanical secondary
holley fuel pump
Mallory Unilite distributor with cap conversion
Accel supercoil
Taylor spiro core 8mm wires(orange to match the car )
Motorsport aluminum waterpump
and of course a balance/blueprint job clearanced for sae40 racing oil

that covers most of it i think
along with a centerforce clutch, 3.91 posi gears, and that close-ratio toploader it should move right down the road
about the only thing i would consider changing would be to put a set of fully ported/polished blue thunder heads on but no way i can afford those now

well i guess the guy fed me a bit of a line but the #s still look good:
HP=472@5100RPM
lb=542@3800RPM
500+lb from 5000RPM down
400+HP from 3800RPM up
with those #s it should be very mean on the street for sure
from 3800 to 5000RPM with that 4sp and 3.91 gears it should be pretty hard to keep up with around minneapolis here

Well i found an interesting project car on Hot Rod TV(speedvision), happens to be a '70 montego. Looks like I might have my wheel/tire question answered now. They put 17X8 with 4.5" back spacing in the front with 275/40/17s. Back has 17X10 with 6" back spacing and 315/35/17s. Only bad thing is they used chevy style rallys(look really good on the car though).

yeah the bumper was carbon fiber and he was going to get the hood made that way too. so i called wheel vintiques to try and get those wheels because the articles said they supplied the wheels. WV said the fronts they make but the 17X10 were made only for hot rod TV and they won't make them again. but gee they did offer me 17X9.5 billets in black powder coat for around $400 each...exactly what i was trying to avoid.

well i called the guys for the carbon fiber...said they would send me some info but haven't yet.
I found a pair of Weld draglites 15X10 with 5.5 backspacing for the rear of my car for $160 and they look great! now i just need to find a set to match the front 15X8 with 4-4.5 backspacing.

...and i put 295/50/15s on the back...fits perfect with those wheels. tried a set of 245/60/15s on the front with a 4" backspaced wheel, worked great but to match the draglites i have to use a 4.5" spacing so it will be borderline.

depends what length of pinion yoke it has, could have been swapped. Driveshafts already that length should be fairly common, try looking at the 80's-newer Crown Vics, Lincolns and late 70's T-Birds

Well I've been gone for quite awhile and have done a few things to the car...
I threw away the not good 30 years ago front end and put in a tubular A-arm, coilover, rack and pinion front end, subframe connectors, hydraulic clutch, tilt steering column, dual radiator fans, March serpentine pulley conversion, and aluminum driveshaft to name a few changes. I have some pictures at http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/sdf250mn/lst?.dir=/Cyclone+project&.src=ph&.order=&.view=t&.done=http%3a//photos.yahoo.com/bc/sdf250mn/lst%3f.dir=/Cyclone%2bproject%26.src=ph%26.view=t

Just wanted to post that I have a 70 Spoiler, 429 cj, auto. Ultra rare cars. I am in the beginning process of restoring mine. But with todays technology, restofy. I am going to punch out a 460, go aluminum heads, fuel injection and nitrous. Compression will be low so it can be fed at any gas station. Looking forward to having fun on the street and strip too. Thanks for all the posts on wheel backspacing,, a big help,, dont know what I am going to put on yet but would like them to be 16's or 17's.

the car should be home in a couple of weeks
it needs to get the uphl. done an i need some tail pipes we used 1&7/8 super comp hdrs into 3'' pipes an flow masters great sound. did you ever get a carbon bumper? i got one wow that weighs about 2lbs. that old chrome one must weigh 60lbs-if you do some drag racing would help-iam painting mine grabber orange so the more black i have the better it will look-in my opinion. he know makes a rear bumper also but i already had mine rechromed-anyway i am done to a couple pcs. of moulding-hood an one rear wheel but do have some leeds-good to see you have been busy

Actually, I am not going to do anything to the car that cannnot be reversed easily. I am also going to keep the 429cj so I can keep the car original. Thanks for the offer anyways.

well I have paint now...will have some pics up on yahoo soon I hope. hopefully in a couple weeks the car will be home and after I put exhaust on it it will be on the road for some fun.
I had it fired up a couple weeks ago...its a shame to cork it off with exhaust, sounds pretty mean with open headers.

I picked up a couple project trucks...since i can't seem to stop spending money on Fords

...so after a clutch mess and other things I finally got it on the road to try and tune my front end...then the starter problems began. Anyone know of a gear reduction starter that actually works with the stock bellhousing, stock flywheel combo? I had a late truck stick starter in for awhile but it didn't seem to mesh right so now im back the the old delco unit. any help would be great.
here are some pics of the car...

Any of you cyclone guys near pittsburgh? I ran across one in a bone yard thatscomplete about a year ago. the guy said 1500 for the car. Its a 70 cyclone 351c 4 sp complete but needs some workdents and rust but very restorable. I would have to go back over and see if its still there. I had pics but I think I lost them with my hardrive I might have them on my spare though.

Since I broke the driveshaft I was playing around with wheels and tires...I thought just for kicks i would see if the wheels I have on the rear(15x10 5.5 backspace with 295/50/15) would fit the front. Now I am really happy i changed the front end because those wheels are just about perfect on the front Now i just have to get another set for the back...but I could always go to a 12" wide rim in the back

...so the 545 is done...
747.3hp at 6000rpm
747.9ft/lb at 4500rpm
works for me on 92 octane

now I just have to make it fit the car
just hope I can get hydro boost brakes to fit...and I would still have to take it apart to get the valve cover off...

anyone want to come help me build headers as I have never done them before??
