"Ford to introduce new rear wheel drive mid-size in 2003.5From BlueOvalNews.com's Robert Lane The last U.S. Ford Fairlane rolled off of the assembly line back in the late 1960's. . . .but word around Dearborn is that it might be coming back as an all new mid-size rear wheel drive model. The mid-sized Fairlane was introduced as a 1962 model sporting the all new 221 V8 Windsor engine (predecesor to the 302). The Fairlane was an immediate sales success and continued to sell extremely well throughout the 1960's; however, by 1970 the nameplate was dropped and replaced by the Torino moniker. The "Fairlane" is one of Ford's most memorable nameplates. Henry Ford's estate here in Dearborn is named Fairlane after the town where Henry Ford's ancestors in Ireland are from. While the Fairlane nameplate didn't survive too long in the States, it has been preserved down under in Austrailia. But that might be changing real soon. As the next generation Taurus (D219) program moves to an S.U.V. or more like BMW's S.A.V. (Sport Activity Vehicle), Ford will need a new mid size vehicle to fill the gap. Enter Ford's E158 program. The E158 program has been given the official green light from Ford and will appear in 2003.5 as a 2004 model. It's highly speculated that the E158 will use the S197 2003 Mustang's hybrid DEW98 chassis. The DEW98 chassis is currently shared between the Lincoln LS, Jaguar S and 2001 Thunderbird. From Ford's internal documents we know that the E158 will use two different engines. The "High Package" will use an all new 3.5L V6. The "High Package" will be available with either an automatic or manual transmission. The 4.6L V8 will be the only optional engine available. Ford has assinged an engineering code of "F7" to the E158 program. Everyone knows that Ford Motor Company wants to consolidate platforms and create globally recognized nameplates. The Ford Fairlane name is just one name that fits into that bill. The E158 will appear at or near the same time as the EA169 next generation Ford Fairlane in Austrailia." ------------------ '72 Mustang Sprint Coupe 351C 4V/FMX/4.30 Trac Loc '94 F-150 XL 5.8L/E4OD/3.55 Limited Slip '97 Probe GTS 2.5L Disposable Commuter

Be careful what you wish for...We don't need a tiny Korean-built piss-pot named a Galaxie just to have the name regurgitated But i agree, maybe a performance version of a Crown Vic?

How about a 2004 T-Bolt option with 4 valve 4.6 and 6 speed as standard equiptment and 5.4Eaton supercharged Lightning engine as optional. I've been thinking about what a Galaxie could be...A Crown Vic, lightly dechromed, only Galaxie badge on the tail; the best road-burner suspension that can be installed without spinal damage; a full-power Lightning engine (no intake or exhaust excuses); a custom 'glass hood to cover it, with tasteful ducts to the cold-air induction (NACA's on each side of the leading edge?); bucket seats with the trick console out of the "FortyNine" showcar. NO OPTIONS! But... Four packages: Galaxie 500XL: Full luxo content with auto or Full luxo content with 6-speed manual Galaxie 500: De-contented. Think Cobra R; one version with auto, one with manual. ------------------ "It only takes money" Dwayne M&M Member #18 '94 Lightning #942 of 4007 '70 Mach1 '69 Cyclone Spoiler II '65 Galaxie 500 + parts car [This message has been edited by Thud (edited 03-07-2001).]

What would be a cool car to slap the Galaxie nameplate on would be a Ford version of the Marauder. [This message has been edited by MLariviere (edited 07-30-2002).]

There is some talk that the new car MIGHT carry the name Torino, rather than Fairlane. I am all for that, if it is a really nice car. And it would give it a separate 'identity' from the Aussie cars.------------------ David Spread Joy. Less cholesterol than butter! 1978 LTD II 2 Door 1979 Ranchero GT

I just hope they have the brains to make it a rear driver. Enough with front wheel drive cars, already!
