Ok First off I'm not sure if a 5 speed is going to make it any easier? It would be costly and require a large amount of modification. But it would not be very hard to put a Hurst 3 speed shifter on the floor. You can get one at most Auto-Zone stores or Pep Boys. The best way yo go would be an Auto Tranny if you want easy. That would be a pretty easy swap.

Remember they had a different transmission bolt pattern on the back of the block on pre 65-6 blocks (I think the change happened around the same time as on the 289s).

I had a bad tranny in my '64 comet (170/3spd) and because of trouble finding a replacement we wound up using a '70 maverick engine (170/3spd) and tranny w/the '64 head and carb.

I also cannot recall if they had a 3spd auto trans for the early bolt pattern, or if you would still be stuck with and old 2spd auto like in my '62 Falcon 2dr Wagon.

I am still not sure what route to take, the car has been sitting at the uphostery shop for a while, I got a quote for a conversion kit that will allow me to use a T-5 on the 170

Okay, other questions - 1) What type of driving to be done by our sister - Freeway, stop and go in town, long haul? 2) Does she know how to drive a stick? 3) Is that three on the tree a full synchro? I forget what years Ford had that box available. 4) What do you hope to accomplish with the 5-speed? 5) What rear end ratio do you have? 6) Will the gear ratios in the 5-speed match that rear end? 7) What does your sister want?

And Welcome to M&M

HMM, driving style? what does she want? i guess im thinking about what i want! She's mainly goint to use it to go back and forth to school. Shes been learning how to drive stick for 2 months now and shes actually doing a pretty good job, we just can get her to parallel park.
Synchros, only 2nd and 3rd, i know ive rebuilt the tranny twice already, its left me stranded in Indio. Ive looked at other stock trannies like the dagenheim (sp?) and another that was off a pinto. but what i am trying to do is make it wasier for her so that she doesnt have to think so much and she can concentrate on her shifts and paying attention to the road. Though even on an automatic like my lightning she has scared me to the point i wont let her drive it for a while.

The conversion kit is supposed to be made custom to my stock spline count, i realy dont know what rear end i have in it, it was stock when i bought the car in 98.
i am not really sure that i will go with the 5 spd, im hoping i can find better options and keep the car stock, because im eventually going to buy her something and get the falcon back from her.

thanks for your help
