I've heard that you can't use a reverse flow water pump on these cars? Well unfortunately I have one and my radiator has both openings on the passenger side. I have a 351w backed by a 4spd. An old 9 inch and it doesn't seem to want to run right. I just got a new distr. for it. Timing seems to be off. I just can't seem to get it right. I've never had such difficulty. And yes it does overheat. thanks John

You need the correct pump. Most likely the overheating problem is causing pre-ignition.

So if i change the pump i'll have to get a different radiator? the comet was an original 6cyl. the guy i bought it off of had changed it over. I also want to install roller rockers, so i wonder what would be less expensive, rebuild my heads or get some already set up for them? And yes i eventually want a t5.

I would not recommend the T-5 unless you have it rebuilt to hold up to the 351 they are not the strongest tranny out there.

John, No you will not need a new radiator if you change the water pump, you just need to get the right pump. If you look at the listings you will see they have pumps with right or left hand inlets. The location of the inlet does not determine if the pump is a reverse flow or not. The reverse flow is used on the late model engines that use a serpentine drive belt, the pump actually rotates the oposite direction than the early model pumps because it is driven by the top side of the belt. If you have a reverse flow pump on your engine, and a V belt drive, then your pump is rotating backwards and will not pump as designed. That would cause your overheating problem. ------------------ Ronnie 69 mach1 351W-4V engineless at the time! 70 Torino GT 351C-4v with a "shaker" Mustangs and More Member #23

And get a fan that has the blade twist in the right direction to match rotation. Ignition timing the 351 is no different that a 289 or 302. Number 1 cylinder at TDC, rotor pointing to #1 plug wire then time it with a lite.
