Was watching Dennis Gage and "My classic car."

They had an all Ford Event from outside Indianapolis. One of the cars they highlighted was a Cougar with an "E" designator. I took that to be the 427. Then they show the interior shot and there is an automatic hooked to it.

Is that right?

I never knew of a 427 hooked to an auto. 400, 428, 429 yeah, but not a real 427!

The 1968 COUGAR GT-E had the 427/390HP as it's powerplant (was not installed on FORD side). This was FORD's answer to HI-PERF until the 428CJ was introduced in spring of 1969.

For the most part, it was a dog on the street, but had the WOW Factor.

Yes, the Cougar GTE was available only in 1968, and the earlier version did come with a milder version of the 427 (hydraulic lifters, single 4 barrel, and smaller heads, similar to the 428CJ units), and were equipped with C6 automatics. However, part ways thru the 68 model year, the 428 Cobra Jet engine was released, and so the later GTE`s were built with the 428CJ, and the 427`s were no longer offered. I would imagine the timeline for the switch to the 428CJ coincided with the release of the CJ for the Mustangs, Fairlanes, and Montego`s.

only 338 GT-E's were released.... the smallest production number of any of the cougar styles/packages.......a very rare cat indeed!

There are about 5 427GTE's around here that I know of.I know of no 428 GTE's.(strange)

I took one out for a "thrash and dash" and agree that it was not impressive. The 68 427 is choked up pretty good.A 428CJ would kill it..

Saddly..one of the nicest ones around here is owned by the biggest liar/scam artist and all round general B.S er this province has seen in a long time..

Cory, FIVE GTE`s? I know of the orange car owned by your buddy "R.M." (same initials, but not me!), the formally green one that was owned by Gordon of Signature Lincoln Mercury, that was repainted black a few years ago, and the black 428CJ GTE that I seen in Burnaby back in the late 70`s or early 80`s. What are the other 2? I recall seeing a blue one in Surrey back in the 70`s, but I haven`t seen it since.

Rory...R.M..my buddy???? Good thing I dont know what you look like....

Did not know there was a 428CJ GTE in town.
I know of the orange one (RM car)The SLM car that I believe was sold to them by Dan Cooper just before I started at Canadian Cougar. There ia a Black 427 car that is a bit rough that a lady was driving to all the shows in the early to mid 90's and I knew of one possibly two on Vancouver Island that were undergoing resto's.

I haven't been to any of the car shows in 10 years so I am a little out of touch as to what is around and what has left the area

Auto could be had with 427 since 1964.
