I just scored a really nice 68 XR7 6.5 Litre. I did a web search and was amazed how many subtle variants there were in the early Cougars. But I can't find out why it would be called a "6.5 Litre".
Could it have been aimed at the European market? Two reasons for thinking that - 1) US autos didn't start using liters until ... when??? and 2) they spelled litre the European way.
Am I right? I thought it was a joke until I removed the emblem and saw the FoMoCo part number!

If you will remember, I think FORD started this with the 65/68 (?) 7 LITRE (SP?) GALAXY. The 7 being the 428.

Congratulations on your find...

The earlier Cougars with 390`s had the "6.5liter" badges on the F fenders. Even earlier, the 65 Pontiac GTO`s also had "6.5 liter" in small print, on their fender badges. The Cougar was kind of touted as being "European-ish" in the early advertisments, maby the mention of Liters added some "continental flair"

You probably have an X-code 390.390 2V high compression,basicly a GT390 with a 2V.All the 6.5s i have seen have been 390-2Vs.

This is an S code 4V. It's got some interesting options that I'll itemise when I've given the car a thorough going over, including some "Erson" valve covers the guy swears were on the car from new.

I'm far from up to speed on Cougars, so maybe there was some jiggery pokery with emblems and stuff. I'll post again when I have all the evidence. All I know for sure is it is S code, 4V. Oh yeah, it has a fat rear end - no tapers towards the outsides. My fingers are crossed it's one of those rare 31-spline rears I've heard about!

I don't think the rear came out untill 69 so it would have been an add on.

Oh ... the Erson valve covers ... a quick web search solved that one. They were just a popular add-on back then. The reason I listened to the guy was 'cos I found a website that said 6.5-litre Cougars came with chrome valve covers and air cleaner tops.
