how to start...
well the first car I bought with my own
money, and for that matter my first car
was a 1968 Cougar... 289\auto\air
black\white...
for the price I paid at the auction I could
have bought a 1963 austin Martin... don't ask..
Anyway to the present...I do restorations
on old cars for a living, all pre 1960, so
the other day a 1968 Cougar XR7 shows up
at my place, a client gave it to me..
So I'm interested in doing a street
machine out of it...but starting with the
basics, which is the suspension..
the car has no engine or tranny.... which is good from my stand point...
here is my ideas, please email and post
here if you have any other ideas...
1. a new 5 leaf rear with either a 1' or 2' lowering kit.
2. All new suspension up front, including
energy suspension bushings.....
3. New coils, 600lb 1' lower then stock
4. new weatherstipping,
5. new interior, probably going with
4 bucket seats...
bring the center consol back.
things it needs are
1. the body extensions outboard of the
tail lights
2. steering column (would like a tilt)
does anyone know of later year cars
that would fit?
3. steeing wheel, "might go aftermarket"
stock engine\tranny was a 302, 230hp with C4.
i'm thinking of staying with that setup or
going to a 3.8 v6 supercharged....
OK, guys let me know what you think..
Best
Dave

Sounds like a great project. As far as your plans.
1 You can take the rear leaf spring insulators out and raise the rear but I'm not sure about lowering unless you go with a mustang shockplate. BTW mustang springs are shorter.
2 Don't use solid bushing like energy on the strut rods, They can break without enough flex in the mount. The car will also ride harsher with them.
The rest sounds great!
I believe a 70 tilt column would work but I'm not sure about the column trim.
Good luck
John

hi rex! welcome to m&m!

the one thing i would suggest for the interior is to ditch the four seater and go with two buckets up front and delete the back seat passenger concept.....

i have had my 67 DGS since 1978 and quite frankly sometimes wish she wasnt in such good shape.... as i would delete the possibility of two more weight weilders in the back ..... i would pull it all out and mini-tub it to house fat-daddy tires and accomodate no more than one passenger!!

i always tell everyone she is a 2-seater anyway! heh heh......

and.... i just dont know if you would have the head-room needed in the back for buckets.....

are you gonna road-course her? the suspension sounds like you might be going that direction?

if you need to be pointed to some good suppliers.... just say the word.....

also... even tho you would lose the XR-7 overhead dash components... and opera lights....making a "perma-vertible" out of her would be cool.... kevin marti did that with a .....um.... i think a 67 cat.... it is cool as all get-out!!!

keep us posted!
