Hi I just registered and i got a few questions about 5.0 ford engines. First what is the difference between a 5.0 and a H.O. engine say 1988 vintage? How can I identify a roller engine? Is there such an engine as a non-H.O. roller motor say like in a cougar? And could i put an H.O. cam in a non H.O. roller motor? And upgrade a engine to a mustang H.O. motor? If i tried this would I have to change the crank too? I know that the engine firing order is different. thanks for all information.Nice web site Stephen

Welcome to M&M ! EFI HO engines since 1986 are all high output high performance engines with forged pistons, .445 lift hydraulic roller cams (.432 in 86)better heads, valve springs, larger intakes and TB. 200 to 225 HP They were available in 86 up Mustangs, Capri's, 91-92 T-Birds or Cougars, and 86 to 92 Lincoln Mark VII LSC's only. All 86 and up passenger car and most truck 5.0 or 302 V-8's are roller engines. Non HO's have different heads, upper and lower intake, tiny cam and tiny TB. 150 to 160 HP The only 5.0 HO non roller engines were the 82-84 carb and 84 TBI versions. They were only available in Mustang GT's, Capri RS's, and HO LTD LX's. All 82 and up 302's or 5.0 V-8's are 50 oz balance. The only way that you can identify a roller block for certain is to remove the intake and look.------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver MCA member# 53321 NHRA and IHRA SS/LA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,&'03 Fleet of FoMoCo products including 88 ASC McLaren Mustang #28 Professional Manwhore The Barry of BarrysGrrl Quote #1: "I never met a magazine mechanic I liked." so my 88 5.0 cougar engine is probably a roller engine? But with crappy heads, pistons cam, manifolds tb etc. I could change the cam heads worked and get a mustang intake and tb and reorder the firing order and it would be a H.O.? I am new to these 5.0 engines and i thought that since the intake went to the pass side it was a H.O. and a intake that went to the drivers side was not an H.O. But as I found out my engine would not run at H.O. firing order. and oh did i not want to change that firing order. I also found out that the cougar engine has smaller injectors that a mustang engine. So I went and got a brain out of a cougar and put it in the mustang and it trys to run a little better now. At lleast it trys to run. before I changed the brain it would not Idle at all.thanks Stephen
