Can you guys help me pick out a color for the top of my Cat? It wont happen for a long time but I am eventually going to overhaul the whole thing & I plan on painting the car bright red, but dont care for the look of 67/8 cougars that are all one color. I have to decide if I want to keep the top white or put on a black vinyl top or paint it black, I think the black would make it look a little meaner, but the white dont look so bad either, plus with the Magnum wheels, they have the black, so I think it would match the top better than white which might look like too much, but I dont know. So vote for what you think looks best -Black Paint -Black Vinyl -White Paint -Colorful Candystripes http://mustangsandmore.50megs.com/MembersPics/Kellxr7.html

Definitely black, in my opinion. White vinyl tops never look good to me.------------------ '70 Mustang Mach 1 351C 4V/FMX/3.25 Open '70 Mustang Convertible 250 I6/3 speed/2.79 Open '72 Mustang Sprint Hardtop 351C 4V/FMX/4.30 Trac Loc '94 F-150 XL 5.8L/E4OD/3.55 Limited Slip

If I keep it white, it would just be paint, as it is now. Would black paint look good or vinyl look better were there many 60s-70s cars that had black painted tops? I know many had black vinyl but black paint?[This message has been edited by Kellxr7 (edited 05-27-2004).]

I'm not familiar with cars that have the top painted a different color from the bottom. Don't they look like fake vinyl tops? I'd vote for one color, but it's not an option

Yeah, that is my one big drawback to the black painted top, I was also thinking maybe it would look like I cheaped out on the top, I usually do like only one color on a vehicle, but just the shape of these cougars, they seem to need a something else, IF I were to go one color it would be Black, I think an all Black Cougar would look sweet but its such a high maintenance color I dont know . If someone could brainwash me into painting it all black I wouldnt mind, its just everytime I mention it to someone they tell me how much of a PITA it is to keep clean.

No, I'd use vinyl or leave it body color. Painted roofs remind me of old Impalas. ------------------ '70 Mustang Mach 1 351C 4V/FMX/3.25 Open '70 Mustang Convertible 250 I6/3 speed/2.79 Open '72 Mustang Sprint Hardtop 351C 4V/FMX/4.30 Trac Loc '94 F-150 XL 5.8L/E4OD/3.55 Limited Slip

Two tone Cougars are low production cars. If the red and white is original I would leave it that way. If it originally had a vinyl top I would reinstall one but thats just me. Really its your choice. -Originally it had a painted polar white top, I have considered keeping the car all original, but it is just a standard 68 that had a 302 2bbl & the only option was its console & the tilt/tilt away steering wheel, I am planning on going restomod because cougars arent worth all that much to begin with, let alone a plain jane smallblock model.

I might be putting my foot in my mouth here but, even though Ive never -really- wanted to paint the top black, I think this looks really cool to my eyes, I was bored & messed around with a pic of my car & took part of a paint scheme of a Trans Am cougar applied it to the top of my car, I think the paint scheme makes the appearence of the car look better because it makes the back area of the car not look so sloped, which is the one thing I dont care for about the 67/8 cougs, what do you guys think? It might be just a phase, I might not like it tomorrow ...heres the link http://www.mercurycougar.net/gallery/showphoto.php/photo/4740 & heres a pic of Vic Yarberrys cool race cougar where I got the idea from... http://www.thuntek.net/cougars_unlimited/tulsa640.jpg[This message has been edited by Kellxr7 (edited 06-22-2004).]

I like it! I'm facing a similar situation with my 67 resto-mod cat. Currently it is silver with a black vinyl top. The top needs to be replaced. I'm going to drive it as is through the summer, then do body work and paint over our long winter. I have a new vinyl top for it, just can't decide between all silver, silver with black vinyl or some sort of two tone paint job.------------------ 67 COUGAR 289 bored 30 over Edelbrock heads & intake, 600 Holley, Comp cam, MSD, headers, bald tires.

I think a silver cat with black vinyl would look pretty nice, dont see to many silver ones, mind you all silver would look nice too, hmm, I understand the dilemma. Got any pics of your car?

..... do what you want with paint.... if you dont want to repaint it the original colour, then have at it and have FUN with it..... my dad has two black cougars and yup.... they are a pain to keep clean.... and even when they are clean the black paint will amplify any little thing you wish you couldnt see..... my white cat looks great even when she gets road-skazz on her.... i can see she is dirty ..... but from 10 feet away she is bright white.... bottom line is to do what you want ..... really!!! have some fun with it! and..... keep us posted..... kk

A guy in town has a 68 XR7 that is gold with a gloss black top,and i think it looks ugly. The rims kill it too, they are the black-n-chrome 10 holers.
