Hey everyone! I am still piddling around with the new 351C-4v in my cougar. The next step is getting the timing right. I have an MSD Billet distributor. It came with a variety of springs and bushings. Which combination of these do I want to use? Basically, how much initial and total timing do I want? Also, by what RPM do I want the full amount of timing to come in at?The combo consists of- open chamber 4v heads, roller rockers, comp cams hydraulic(246/[email protected], .585"/.581" lift), 1 3/4 headers, Strip DOminator intake, 750 holley, C6 auto with TCI 10" converter(3500 rpm stall), 4.11's and 26' et Drags. Thanks! Tom ------------------ 1991 F150, 4X4, lift, 35's, 4.9l 1991 Mustang LX 5.0L, AOD 1970 Cougar, 351C-4v, C6

Go with the bushing that comes in the distributor. It should be a 21 degree bushing. For the advance springs I would go with 1 light spring and 1 medium spring for a start. You should have enough converter for that. Your car is too heavy for the fastest curve (2 light springs), but should have enough cam and converter to keep from having to use the heavy springs. With the big duration it will want lot's of timing. Try 18 intial. With the 21 degree bushing that will give you 39 total. If it pings, back off 2 degrees, if it doesn't, try going up to 19 or 20 initial. Later, David Cole

Just for an example, on my 351C race motor, I run the 21* bushing, intital timing set at 15* for 36* total and I run the heavy springs. I run the heavy springs due to the fact it idles at 1200 rpm and the lighter springs want to start the advance curve there. Makes setting the timing and idle real tuff. Since my convertor flashes to 6000, even with the heavy springs, the timing is all in before the car launches.

I guess the idle does come into play. My 383W race motor will idle at 850 in gear when warmed up. The advance starts around 1300 or so and is all in by 2800. Never feel the 2800 though, my converter goes to 5400 against the brake, flash point a little higher than that.BTW, my converter is a PTC. This is the first converter I have ever had that stalls *exactly* where they said it would. I'll vouch for them, so will Russ Hood (SG236). They are the fastest growing converter company in the southeast. The have a small website at: Kenny Ford, the owner was one of the top guys at TCI until TCI was sold to Federal Mogul a few years ago. Went out on his on. Hans, you might give them a try. Later, David Cole

It is an 8" Coan. All their race convertors are custom built. They told me it would flash 5800-6000, and it goes right to 6000. I have never broken it, or even hurt it.

I goofed . I have one heavy silver spring and one light silver spring in my distributor. I also just bumped the timing up to 42* last nite. It's on alcohol so it can stand the timing.
