Took the Mach 1 in today to Carmax, and they offered me $17,500 for it, about 2,000 over trade-in. 19,000 miles on the car.

I need to get rid of the car, should I take the $17,500 or hold out for more with a private sale? I think private party is around $18,500 and retail is around $21,000.

Also, I had purchased an extended warranty with the car. Anybody have any experience with getting a refund on the unused portion of the extended warranty? I paid around $1,200 for the 2 years of extra warranty, and I'm only 4 months into it.

I'm thinking if I can get back 500-1000 of the warranty I'll definitely take the $17,500 and be done with it no hassle.

I've got a 2003 Mach 1 and would be happy with $17,500, especially a no hassle, no advertising deal like CarMax. My Mach just turned 20k miles and I've been sort of thinking about selling it as well.

As for your warranty, if it's a Ford warranty, you can apply for a prorated refund of the unused portion. There should be a 1-800 number for customer service who can answer that for sure.

Craig, glad to see you're back.

Sold the Mach private sale, $18,500, plus getting 400 back for the warranty.

Glad to see you hung in there and was able to do a private sale.

I wasn't trying to "persuade" you to do the CarMax deal, just that in my personal situation, (I owe less than $10k on mine), $17,500 wouldn't be a bad deal for me as I paid $20,800 for mine, new, in 2004. Sorry to see you let it go as they're fun cars, but glad it worked out positive for you!

No worries. I was tempted to take the Carmax deal just because it was easy.

I miss the car already, but I have other projects to work on. My 68 is totally unassembled waiting on body and paint, and I have recently acquired another 68 cheap to work on that is in a very good starting point and once it is flipped, should provide the funds to work on the fastback.

Its also nice to be car-payment free. No debt except the house payment. Can't decide if I'll stay in to retirement or not, but don't want the decision to stay or go to be solely tied to finances or debt.
