This isn't help I know, but I'm curious to what your owner's manual says. Does it tell you to take it to an authorized dealer? Mine did on my '99 on how to change a tail light bulb

Hey Carole,

Thanks a bunch for the reply. I'm a bit frustrated that I can't get any info, but in due time. The car belongs to my best friend, but I'm trying to help as much as possible. I'm the car girl of the two!! Let me know if you find out anything, otherwise I think her choice is to go to the dealership, especially if there's a warranty!! Have a good day.

Is it running rough and/or skipping? Most likely it isn't plug wires causing a low power/no high end problem.

Have you scanned the PCM for diagnostic codes? That would be my first check, then I'd check fuel pump pressure. How old is the fuel filter?

Welcome to M&M!

I'm not sure about the 2000, but on my 02, it has the coil on plug set-up. I still haven't tried to change the plugs on mine yet, but from what I've heard, it's fun.

Hey 68F100

Thanks for the welcoming words. Yes, Bruce aka Prince Charming :-) is in SV. Pretty good investigative techniques! I'll tell him you said hello. I'm grateful for this website. What have I been missing all this time!!!
Have a wonderful day!

Thanks for your tips. That sounds more like the cure I'm looking for. Although now the problem is the starter. It kicks over, but seems too tired. Not like the spindles are bad, just refusing to maintain spark. Sounds like it's not firing in all cylinders. Eternally grateful!

Plugs on a 4.6 are GRAAAAVY!! Compared to a 5.0, you can change the plugs in AT LEAST 1/2 the time, or better, on a 4.6 liter.

At work, we have a contest once a year called the Pit Stop Challenge held after work on a Friday. There's a keg, prizes....basically a morale thing.

Anyway, it's comprised of teams of two technicians performing basic maintenance on two identical cars....rotate, belt change, and an 8 cylinder tune up on two Grand Marquis' with a 4.6.....from the used car stock....of course.

I was able to pull all eight coils, change all 8 plugs and have the car running in 8 minutes 10 seconds.....and I got beat by 1/2 a minute. My opponent had a tighter 7mm swivel. My 7mm swivel was a little sloppy, so I had to guide it onto the coil hold down bolts. The other team won KC Chiefs tickets. We got certificates for dinner.
