I was talking to someone the other day who just purchased a 2004 Mustang 6 cyl Vert. It has the 3.9L V-6 and they want to install dual exhaust on the car. parts are very limited for the 3.9. Does anyone know if exhaust systems for the 3.8 interchange with the 3.9?

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I sure don't remember Ford ever using a 3.9L motor in anything, and definately not in a Mustang. The 3.8 V6 was put in the mustang in 94, and updated with a new intake and heads in 99. I don't think they did anything else to it after that as they went with a 4.0 V6 in 05. So, I think the person with the car was just misinformed and probably has the 3.8. Hope that helps.

I did some checking, and for 2004 there are some 3.8 and 3.9 V-6s. Ford replaced the 3.8 mid-year. I thought it was odd too, but it checks out. I just can't find anything on what the differences are.

Ford just did some weird mid-year switch on the '04 V6s for the 3.9...I think the stroke is a little longer, but the actual engine overall is the same otherwise. I do believe a dual exhaust setup for the 3.8 would bolt up to the 3.9.

That's what I thought too. I thought it was really weird in 2004, going from a 3.8 that they have used for what seems like forever to a 3.9 for half a year and then when the new one comes out going to the 4.0.

Thanks Frank and Scott!
