TiresHi Everybody, Well its time for tires on my 1996 Mustang GT 4.6 SOHC. I wanted to ask if anybody knows what manufacturer of tire came with the car? I know the size is P225/55z/ R16 What does everybody think about using the original manufacturer of the tires that came with the car? Waste of money? It seems logical to use them since FORD did test the car with those tires on them. I'm not sure if i can afford the z rated tires, so i hope going to a h rated of the same manufacturer will be alright. Thanks for any suggestions. DB

Either BFGoodrich or Good Year was originally on the car. Do you still have the original tires?Typically, the factory tires aren't all that great...less of a lifespan than what you can buy at the store (in some cases)...going with the same manufacturer isn't a bad thing; just going with the exact same model might not be great. I don't know about those '96 tires...but I had to replace a couple 17" tires when I had Bullitt wheels on my V6...I went with the factory spec tires, and they cost $250 a piece. I had about 25K on the tires when they were replaced; still had maybe another 10K (replaced due to a blowout...I wanted at least a matching pair). A friend at work just replaced the tires on his '01 GT with some BFGs; only cost him $150 a piece. So you can get a better tire for a little cheaper, in some cases. It's certainly not unheard of. ------------------ Frank S.----MCA Member 40390 '03 Mustang GT coupe '99 Mustang coupe '77 Ghia--"II Good"

I had Goodyear Gatorbacks on the Bullit wheels that came on my 02 GT. They wore out at about 25k, and I upgraded to Goodyear Eagle F-1s. The Gatorbacks were about $175/each and I got the F-1s for abotu $225/each. From Tirerack, the F-1s are only $189. The F-1 are much better than the Gatorbacks and look really good on the Bullit rims. ------------------ Greg W. IIGood - no i do not have the original tires. The original wheels on the 96 gt is what i have on there.I thought FORD tested tires on their cars, to decide which ones to use, which is why i wanted to go with the one that came with the car.

They do test the tires, but they also don't always put the best tire available on the cars. Just think back a couple of years ago to the whole Firestone/Explorer mess. But also look at it this way, use my ccomparison of the Gatorback vs. F-1 pricing in my earlier post. Roughly, the difference in price is $35/tire. Multiply that by 4 tires and you have $140/car. Now multiply that by 140,000-180,000 cars produced and pretty soon we are talking about real money here. Granted, Ford could always pass that increase in pricing onto the consumer, but one of the selling points of the Mustang has always been the "bang for the buck." When Ford selected the tires for your car, price was a huge consideration. I'm not saying they will go with cheap tires, but there are better available.------------------ Greg W. First off let me say thank you to everybody who responded. Very informative.I have decided to go with the BF GoodRich Comp T/A 225/55-16 (stock tire size) H-rated (stock was z-rated) for my stock daily driver 1996 Mustang GT 4.6 sohc with the goal in mind of long tread life (no emphasis on performance). I live in FL so all I need is a dry/wet traction (all season tire). My 2nd choice was the Bridgestone Turanza LS. You can see the tire rack comparison here: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Compare2.jsp?shipquote=N&compare=true&partNumber=&make=&model=&clarifier=&price=&width=225%2F&ratio=55&diameter=16&sortCode=&speedRating=&qty=&stockMe ssage=&type=T&URL=&newCompare=true&prevprice=&loadRating=&promoShortText=&promoUrl=&promoLongText=&sidewall=&sidewallShown=&frontTire=&frontLeftTire=&rearTire=&rearLeftTire=&wantRH P=&RHPprice=&sumRating=&hasSpec=&hasWarranty=&hasComments=&hasTests=&hasSurveys=&perf=&pre=&specCode=&autoMake=&autoModel=&autoYear=&autoModClar=&goWhere=%252Ftires%252FCompare1.js p&minLoad=S&AddToUser=true&speed_rating=HR&startIndex=0&sortValue=2&compareList=0&qty_255HR6TTA_=4&qty_255HR6G009_=4&qty_255HR6RE950_=4&compareList=3&qty_255HR6TLS_=4&qty_255HR6EL4 2_=4&qty_255HR6BZLM22_=4&qty_255R6BZWS50_=4&qty_255HR6PC_=4&qty_255HR6CH95MB_=4&qty_255HR6CH95_=4 I wanted to look into the BG GoodRich KDW but Tirerack doesn?t have it on their website. Its probably more than I want to spend anyways ($100/tire) since it?s a z-rated tire.
Has anyone had any specific problems with BF GoodRich Comp T/A 225/55-16 H-rated? If have owned could you tell me how many miles you got out of the tire? As far as places to get them put on, anything I should know before hand (who to stay away from, etc?) I am getting each tire balanced with a 4 wheel alignment (not sure if I need one though or not)
Thanks DB
