My 97 Cobra has an odd vibration at low RPM. It is worst when the engine is cold, but never completely goes away.
Here's the lowdown. The idle kept hanging around 2000RPM but there were no error codes, so I replaced the IAC valve. There was no change, so I replaced the TPS. Again, no change. Out of frustration, I took it to the dealer for a checkup since there were still no error codes. They said the MAF was bad, so I replaced it with a ProM 80R. Immediately I started getting an error code for a bad O2 sensor so I replaced that. Now I have this very noticable vibration at low RPM.
Should I have replaced both of the forward O2 sensors as a pair? Would having the wrong O2 sensor cause this? According to the parts book the fronts are different than the rears.
Any ideas are appreciated.
Thanks,
Dave

Sounds like you've gotten yourself in a little pickle here. First of all, I'm not sure what problem you're after. You mentioned a vibration at low rpm but in the same sentence, you said you replaced the IAC for a high idle at 2000 rpm. I can tell you, as an owner of a 2003 Mach 1 with practically the same engine as yours, an odd vibration is present in my car as well at idle. It's nothing that worries me because it's so minor, I would barely notice it if it wasn't for the shaker shaking.

The IAC rarely causes a high idle situation. Usually, the needle valve inside gets stuck closed and caused the engine to die upon start up, or the IAC solenoid just goes bad and fails shut.

I get a little frustrated myself when people say things like "frustrated, I took the car to the dealership" or "as a last resort" type thing. But in this case, it looks like you got some bad advice. I've rarely seen a MAF cause driveability problems like the ones you describe. As a matter of fact, MAF's hardly ever go bad, but there are SOME techs out there that replace them "religiously" for anything.

I wouldn't have been so quick to replace that O2 sensor. You should have put the old MAF back on first. Also, you CAN'T JUST swap out MAF'S for bigger ones. They have to be calibrated for your car....you didn't mention that.

After all of this, I really can't help you out because like I said in the first sentence, you're really not clear on which symptom you're after. You're right that there are two different O2 sensors, one is a monitor, the other is the heater. The one you're after is the one with a green connector. The other ones have a blue connector.

How many miles are on your car? Is your throttle body clean or is it sticking with carbon and oil build up. This is a common occurence with high mileage cars and could cause your high idle. Do you have any hi performance mods? If so, then anything could be causing the driveability concern.

Don't think I helped, but maybe gave you a couple of things to think about.

Sub,
Thanks for the response. Here's some more details. The car has 105K, I changed the plugs and cleaned the throttle body right before the trip to the dealer. The MAF is a ProM-80R. The calibration sheet says it was set up for a 96 Cobra, which I assume to be the same as 97. The replacement O2 sensor is from Bosch. The parts guy at the Napa store I went to has always done well in the past. The MAF is the only performance upgrade.
The "last resort" trip to the dealer was because the basic code reader I was using wasn't picking up any problems. I was trying to avoid the $150 bill to plug in to there analyzer.
The vibration is what I am concerned about. The high idle problem went away after I replaced the MAF. The vibration came on gradually after I replaced the O2 sensor. I would assume(maybe incorrectly) that if I installed the wrong type of O2 sensor that I would get another error code.
Does any of this help?

Dave

Dave-Regarding the T-Body, did you see a sticker attached to the T-Body that says "danger, do not clean" or something like that. Just be careful with the butterfly flapper inside as some of them have some kind of "special coating" on them. You can clean the inside of the body itself and the edges of the butterfly flap thing. Don't think that has anything to do with your vibration, but cleaning it none the less never hurts anything.

Don't think I can help you out on the vibration as, like any other decent mechanic, I'd have to experience it first hand, and I haven't seen or worked on any other 4.6 dohc cars with that concern. Kind of hard taking a stab in the dark. It's hard to tell if anything you did to the car caused it, but I wouldn't think new 02 sensors would do that as they really don't do anything other than sit there and "sniff". It doesn't sound like you've got a base engine concern, so it's hard to tell. The vibration in my '03 Mach has been there since I bought it, so I chalked that up as a "normal vehicle characteristic".

Do me a favor, and either put your VIN in your next post here or email it to me and I'll run an OASIS report for you and see if there's anything out there that's been reported concerning your complaint. I'm home all day just farting around with Christmas lights and what not, so I can check here frequently.

P.S. At $150 a pop, I'd be a little apprehensive at the dealerships as well, especially after hearing the inconclusive diagnosis they sold you (MAF sensor). Here in Kansas City, we charge $79 for an EEC diagnosis. I think that's a pretty good price and worth it. There are some shops that charge over $100, so sometimes it pays to shop around. Of course, it's all relative because no matter if you pay $79, $100, or $150, your money buys you only what that particular dealership has to offer you in technician. I feel I'm a pretty decent drive tech, so for the $79 we charge, the customer is getting a pretty good deal. Food for thought, and I may be blowing a little smoke up my own butt, but if I didn't believe in myself then I wouldn't feel so comfortable with my job and enjoy it so much.

SPECIAL SERVICE MESSAGES
15697 NORMAL CONDITION: MOMENTARY GRUNTING SOUND
SOME VEHICLES WITH AIR CONDITIONING UTILIZING R-134A MAY EXHIBIT A MOMENTARY GRUNT/POP AFTER BEING PARKED FOR SOME TIME & THE COMPRESSOR IS ENGAGED BEFORE THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT HAS WARMED UP. THIS IS DUE TO LIQUID R134A BEING PUMPED OUT OF THE COMPRESSOR. R134A WILL TRAVEL TO THE COOLEST POINT (THE COMPRESSOR) ONCE THE ENGINE HAS COOLED, DUE TO THE DIFFERENCE IN TEMP BETWEEN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT & THE VEHICLE INTERIOR. WHILE MANY VEHICLES HAVE PCM STRATEGIES THAT ADDRESS THIS BY REPEATEDLY CYCLING THE COMPRESSOR ON START- UP, THIS MAY NOT TOTALLY ELIMINATE IT. REPLACING A/C COMPONENTS WILL NOT ELIMINATE THIS. COMPONENT DURABILITY IS NOT AFFECTED. MINIMIZE THE NOISE BY TURNING THE A/C SYSTEM TO VENT BEFORE EXITING, & IN MILD AMBIENT TEMPS (APPROX. 50-75F) WAITING A FEW MINUTES BEFORE TURNING ON THE A/C OR DEFROST.

SOME 1996-98 MUSTANGS MAY EXHIBIT A RATTLE NOISE FROM THE UNDERHOOD AREA. IN SOME CASES THE NOISE MAY SOUND LIKE IT IS BEING GENERATED IN THE DASH OR COWL AREA ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. WHEN DIAGNOSING THIS TYPE OF RATTLE CHECK THE LOCATION OF THE PURGE FLOW SOLENOID (9C915). IF THE PURGE FLOW SOLENOID CONTACTS THE A/C ACCUMULATOR IT MAY BE THE SOURCE OF THE RATTLE. TO REPAIR, SIMPLY REPOSITION THE PURGE FLOW SOLENOID AWAY FROM THE ACCUMULATOR.

to follow up on this...
I started getting a Check Engine light about 2 weeks ago right after being told I should replace the plug wires. I replaced the wires and the light and the vibration went away...

Thanks for all the input,
Dave
PS I used MSD 8.5mm SuperConductor Wires.
