I was looking a friend's 96 with a 3.8L V6. There is a pinhole coolant leak between the timing cover and the block, just below the head on the passenger side. (Behind the coil pack.) It loses about a gallon of water every 30 miles. Is this a common problem?

I want to fix the car for her but I'd like to know if it's simply a gasket or if there is a problem with the 3.8L timing covers. I was hoping to have her pick up the parts this week to do the work this weekend. I need to know if the timing cover should also be replaced.

Does anyone know about this General Recall?

Might wanna check with Sam (mustangs68)...I believe he had this problem with his '95 V6. I do know that up until 1997, the 3.8L head gaskets were fairly prone to blowing.

The FSA you noted replaced the front timing cover on Mustangs and T-birds with 3.8L V6 engines 1995-1997 free of charge. it was not a safety recall, but an owner notification. The registered owner should have recieved a letter and would come in to get the timing cover replaced for free.

Since its not a safety recall, it expired in 2001.

Sorry You might try to talk your dealer into a deal but they can't do much since its been 3 years now.

Thanks, Charlie. I sent the PDF along to the car's owner. She'll have to see if there's anything her local Ford dealer can do.
