My sister's '02 GT is throwing this code. I have yet to jump in. Can someone give me suggestions on the first places to look? Check valves? Never worked on a Mustang before.

No offence to HotStang, but how did he reach gear head status? A P0442 has nothing to do with the EGR system at all. It's definition per Ford PCED is a "small Evap leak". The main cause of this is most likely your sister didn't tighten the gas cap all the way and when the EVAP monitor did it's routine check of it's system, it saw that small leak and set the DTC. The light will go off in 40 (I could be wrong) drive cycles. Your best bet would be to disconnect a battery cable for about 10 min (resetting Keep Alive Memory), and make sure the gas cap is fully seated properly. Reconnect the battery and see if the light comes back on. If it does than that means there is a hard fault that needs to be repaired. It will not affect the performance of the vehicle at all, you just won't pass smog until you get it fixed.

"Gearhead" status is merely a status that is reached by post count on the board. The more posts you make, your title changes.

As for the gas cap thing...I don't know about '02s, but I know my 2003 GT has a separate idiot light on the dash that actually says "CHECK FUEL CAP" if the cap isn't tightened all the way...something Ford put in fairly recently.

I do drivability work at a Ford dealership and a P0442 is for a "small evap leak"....most likely a sticking vapor management valve, a bad canister vent solenoid, a loose vapor line etc etc. A PO442 would most likely NOT be set by a loose fuel filler cap. A loose fuel filler cap would produce a P0455....or "gross leak". If it's a 2002, why not just let Ford take care of it?? That's what your warranty is for!!
