Thanks to some of you nice folks, I corrected my 1996 GT's idling problem by installing a new idle air control valve, but now there is a new problem. When I'm driving the car, the engine will sometimes shut off--it always seems to happen when I reach a red light or slow down. I have watched the RPM's and what appears to be happening is that when I slow down, the RPM's go WAY low, causing the engine to sometimes die. Sometimes the engine can recover from the dip in RPM's, but sometimes they just go too low and the engine shuts off.

My tachometer says that the engine idles between the 500 and 1000 RPM mark (about 700 RPM). Isn't this a little low? Wouldn't my engine be able to stay running if the idle were set a little higher than it is? I know that the idle on my car's engine is pre-set, but isn't there ANY way I can bump that idle up a bit without taking it to the dealership?

I think there's a kit Ford sells that lets you adjust the throttle position sensor and increase the idle speed.

Have you checked for any codes?

When I first started driving the Mustang after the installation of the idle air control valve, I got a misfire code on cylinder #8. I cleared that code and the "Check Engine" light has not been on since then.
