Hello everyone. I used to visit this site quite often when I had my 66' Coupe. Now I am driving a 98Gt with 4R70W tranny, and want to get to low 12's NA one of these days. Instead of going the usual 4.6 route, which consists of $3,000 + blowers, Bullet intakes for $1,500, and expensive cams, could I get there for less money and less hassle with a built 351? How much HP would I need to generate to get my 3,200 lb pig into the low 12's? Would the cost of building a carburated 351W with that much grunt be about the same or less as dropping a lot of coin on essentially a new 4.6 motor with blower? Keep in mind that everything I will have to do for the 351W I will have to do for the 4.6 with a blower (rebuilt tranny, upgrade the 8.8, subframes, etc.) The price comparison I am looking at is between a built 351W with 94-95 k-member and a 4.6 with forged internals, 99+ heads, bullett intake, long tube headers, etc.) I have read you posts and have seen the amazing things you have all done with Clevelands and Windsors. My feeling is why not do the same thing in my 98GT? Fuel injection is nice, the 4.6 is smooth, but there are no emissions where I live and the car is going into "toy" status in less than a year. Any thoughts?

For what its worth, leave the 98GT 4.6 as it is and find a Fox body and do the 351. It will be cheaper in the long run.Mike

for what its worth my brother is running a 01 GT essentially stock (mac cold air, and flowmaster delta 2 chambers) to 14.01's on the crappy tires it came with....this weekend were installing 4:10's and he ordered a chip from JDM in New Jersey. Estimated Et's on drag radials will be 12.9's on 94 octane... However if ya wanna get really nuts talk to some of the guys on www.corral.net most of em run in NMRA and will be more than happy to help ya hit your mark....Especially talk to Bob Cosby. He s running a 98 cobra into the low 12's without a huffer. Hope this helps

The 99-up mod motors are running strong, but an 01 GT is a far cry from a 98 GT automatic. To run low 12s NA, it's going to take some SERIOUS work. And yeah, I'd just get either a fox or a 94-95 if you like the SN95 style and drop a stroked windsor in it... it'll be a lot easier if you start with a 302.

I also read the Corral quite often. There are quite a few guys dipping into the 12's NA, but as you said, they are hard core. If I did stick with the 98 motor, I would ditch the heads, get some 99+ heads, ported and polished, regrind cams, springs, valves, bullet intake, long tubes, do some serious work to the 4R70W to get the parasitic loss down, 4.10's, and whole bunch of suspension work. Then I think 12's are possible if the gods are shining down on me. The advantage of the 98 motor is the fact that the compression will be higher than a 99+ even after porting. The mod motors are also very tuneable with the new software packages out, so even with a wild cam, the car can be programmed to be vey driveable. There is something to be said about the 351W though. What an awesome motor with awesome potential. I mean, Alex is getting 300hp at the flywheel with his $1,500 302 buildup (I loved that thread!!) and that is pretty close to what a 4.6 Cobra motor comes stock with. 300 HP at the flywheel with a 351W is simple, isn't it? More than likely I will stick with the 4.6 because they are the future of the sport and aftermarket stuff will get better, but a carburated 351W with all the goodies would kick some *** !!! I just think that setup would give me the best of both worlds!

High 12s would be relatively easy with 99-up heads and bolt ons, but that's a far cry from the low 12s originally asked about. Of course, there are stroker shortblocks out there now... with a cobra motor (forged crank and 4V heads) along with some good forged rods, you could gear the crap out of it and spin it accordingly and get low 12s on slicks. If it were me, I'd stick with the mod motor, go with cobra heads, etc, and stick a big fat blower on it to pull some nice 10s.
