I'm tired of paying other people to retrieve the trouble codes in my car whenever this light comes on. I've been putting off buying a code scanner, but now I'm going to do it.My question is this: My 1996 Mustang uses an OBD II type scanner...will this format be used for a good while longer? Do the newest Mustangs use the OBD II code system? I don't want to buy a scanner that will be obsolete next year. ------------------ *andy* ([email protected]) also known as...***Boss Hoss*** *1965 Mustang 289 coupe* *1996 Mustang GT coupe*

Good question. I have a code scanner that I used on my 94. I don't know if I can use it on my 01 Bullitt or not. Anyone else know off the top of their heads?I'll check around... Mike

I believe my 2000 uses OBD II. I have not read anything in the automotive journals I get that indicate anything coming soon like an OBD III or the like. You might consider trying to check the NHTSA's website to see if they have anything about new code systems coming, since I think they're the ones that influence such regulations?? Hope this helps.------------------ Joe C. 2000 V6 Convertible

Joe C. I checked the NHTSA's website, but I couldn't find anything that would tell me about standards for trouble codes. I probably didn't look in the right place. Heck, I didn't even know those guys regulated that kind of thing! Any more info would be much appreciated. THANKS to all! ------------------ *andy* ([email protected]) also known as...***Boss Hoss*** *1965 Mustang 289 coupe* *1996 Mustang GT coupe*

The OBDII is a federally mandated requirement on 96 and newer vehicles. Most of the lower priced scanners cover only the generic codes. If you can afford the best is to go with an updateable scanner. I personnally use the one from B&B Electronics --- Autotap. The one I have covers both Ford and GM product lines. As for the pre 96 vehicles. The scanners use a different connector and communications protocol with the computer. So the one you use on a say 94 will not work on a 2001. Sorry 71ragtop.

Boss Hossgo to www.autotap.com You will need a PC along with the autotap unit and the software. If you use a laptop then you can record data from the computer during your trips down the strip. I have the GM and Ford unit. 4 trips to have a code read pays for the unit. Software updates have been free.
