Pretty stale in here lately, so I figured I would ask an intriguing question. If they are all aluminum, wouldn't it be easier and more cost effective to just have the current set ported and polished, even if they are the dreaded 98'heads? Could you put larger valves in them, as they do with the cast iron 69 windsor heads from a 351? Those are a good example of taking a so-so head and making it flow well. I would much rather keep my stock ones and modify them then having to buy 99's and then have to ditch my 98 heads.

From what I have read & heard, the 96-98 heads can't match the flow of the stock 99+ heads even when ported. The valves are just too small and the cam is not very aggressive either. By the time you buy a cam and put in larger valves, it would have been cheaper to do the swap. I swapped out the entire engine from a 2000 into my 96. I dynoed last weekend and made 256 RWHP. Stock 96-98 GTs are not even making 200 RWHP. The engine only cost my $675 and I sold my 96 for $500.

256 RWHP?? Wow! Is that a stock '00 GT motor? I thought those things only pulled 260 at the flywheel...not bad at all...

...man, I need to start making more money so I can afford a GT...and fast!

Bone stock 00 motor. Mods are MAC long-tube headers, WMS power-pipe, Pro-M 87MM MAF and JMS chip. Most of the stock 99+ GTs were pulling about 235 RWHP. That includes the bullitts. The Austin Area Stangs has a dyno day last Saturday. Pretty fun deal. My combo is running too lean, so I am having the chip recalibrated and adding an adjustable fuel regulator. Should see a few more horses after that.

Randy,
That's a great set of numbers. You must be very happy with the swap.
