I would like to get my tranny and rear dif done this weekend, and wanted to know what you all suggest. I am running Mobil 1 synthetic in the engine. By the way, does my 98Gt have an AOD or AOD/E??????????

I swear by Amsoil. I use their Series 2000 0W-30 in the motors of two of my cars as well as their oil filters (will be putting it in the '00 Vert once I get 3,000 on the motor), their universal ATF in both automatics and the manual in the Vert, the univeral ATF in the power steering, and their Series 2000 75W-90 gear lube in the rear end of the Vert. I also use their PI performance improver in my gas. My '93 Taurus now has 84,000 on it with no motor or transmission problems. No cold weather starting problems and the original battery in the '93 was good for almost 6 years and I still have the original in my '96 Saturn with no signs of it going bad anytime soon. It may cost a little more than Mobil 1 but all the data I've seen on oil performance indicated Amsoil surpasses Mobil 1 for both wear resistence and durability (Series 2000 is good for 35,000 miles or 1 year between changes). The only pain is that the filter must be changed every 6 months, which is a little messy and requires a top off of the oil. I also just put a K&N in my Saturn and tried a set of these new "Halo" spark plugs. It has made a performance difference but I won't put in the other cars until I've had some run time in the Saturn (the Saturn is my guinea pig for stuff lake this since I hate it so much - should have bought another Ford, learned my lesson). Hope this helps if I haven't been editorializing too much. Here's a plug for any Mustang owners in New England - NE Mustang Car Club Show is August 12 at the Northampton Airport in Northhampton, MA. - Any M&M'ers interested? ------------------ Joe C. 2000 V6 Convertible

Joe and Mr. Rag, thanks for the comeback. I am glad that I have an AOD/E by the way. I saw that the ratios were a little steeper. Shifts really well, and kind of tweaks the car a little. I might be bending your minds about a tranny, rear and tire ratio/size question later, and how they affect things.Getting back to Synthetics, I am amazed by how many miles you can get on the Amzoil. You change the oil every 35,000 miles?? My friends dad sell's the stuff, so I will check on the prices, but Mobil 1 synthetic at Wally World is a pretty decent price, so I might stick with that and run it out to 5K before changing.

Yes, Series 2000 will go 35,000 miles or 1 year.If you run with Amsoil's bypass filter arrangement, you can go even longer. In that case you have the oil analyzed periodically and then if they tell you it needs to be changed you do, if not you leave it in. The problem with today's cramped engine bays is finding a place to put it - I've only seen them used mainly in pickups - I haven't had a car yet that isn't so cramped underhood that I could find a reasonable place to put a bypass set up, so I go with the conventional filter arrangement. Amsoil literature has a testimonial where a truck driver went something like 400,000 miles without changing the oil. They did an engine overhaul and said he could have left the current parts in as is, due to the fact the wear was so minimal. If you use their tranny fluid in your auto, I can tell you that your shifts will get smoother (especially in real cold weather)and to boot, the fluid is good for something like 100,000 miles before it needs to be changed. If you know someone who sells it give it a try - its worth the extra money. ------------------ Joe C. 2000 V6 Convertible

I use Castrol GTX regular old 10w-30 motor oil. I don't care WHAT the manufacturer says, I ain't leaving ANY lubricant in my engine for over 3,000 miles. I've done that my entire life and never had any oil-related failures. IMHO, synthetics are a complete waste of money unless you're racing.------------------ Dave 1993 5.0 LX convertible. Multigrades aren't that much more expensive, and Valvoline synthetic is actually a pretty good deal when you can find it on sale. I personally am going to change my own oil, use Mobil 1, and do it every 6K which justifys the $30-$35 per change. Seeing that I usually pay $21 for a penzoil change, it seems well worth it.
